dopedx Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 (edited) Hey guys i have done some reasearching of my own already about buying and owning a car in australia but am still a bit confused.I was hoping that maybe one of you guys would be able to explan things a bit better. I am currently living in new zealand but am moving over to the gold coast later this year to live and work. From what i understand you need a RWC and rego. Is insurance compuslory? How do you go about getting a rwc or does the seller need to get it? Can it be registered with out a rwc. I'm guessing a rwc is what we call a warrent of fitness over here. And if i buy a car out of the state of queensland i have to get new plates and re register it is that correct? I'm sure ill have a few more questions along the way and sorry for sounding stupid. Thanks in advance Sam Edited January 24, 2010 by dopedx Quote
B.L.Z.BUB Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 Took me a while to fihure when i got here. Your best bet is to buy a car with Rwc and rego. Yes rwc is like a WOF. Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance is covered in your rego. Thats why its so expensive. If you buy a car with no rego you will need to get a RWC to register it. Once it is RWC you just need to keep the rego going. There isnt a 6monthly RWC/WOF check. Unsure about cars from out of state. Quote
7shades Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 In a nutshell, nothing happens without a rwc... Which can be issued by any govt. approved inspection station. If the car you're buying is currently registered, you will need a rwc to change that registration into your name. If its not registered, you will need to have the vehicle inspected, a rwc issued, and then you can register it. Compulsory third party (CTP) insurance is included as part of the rego... And technically speaking that's all you need to drive the car on public roads, but you'd be stupid to just have that alone. Third Party Property (shitbox insurance as we used to call it) covers the damage you do to someone else's car, but not your own. Comprehensive is obviously full coverage. If you buy a car in another state you have (I think) 3 months to obtain a rwc, cancel the out-of-state rego and then re-register the car in QLD. You'll be needing a QLD licence or at least a CRN (customer reference number) before you can do ANYTHING with cars and paperwork though. Not hard to get one, you just gotta have enough ID, and something that proves your home address in QLD like a bank statement or power bill or something. Quote
7shades Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 Oh and don't you mean 'Wurrunt uf Futness'? Quote
irokin Posted January 24, 2010 Report Posted January 24, 2010 Oh and don't you mean 'Wurrunt uf Futness'? rofl If the car you're buying is currently registered, you will need a rwc to change that registration into your name. Its also illegal to sell or advertise a registered car without a current safety certificate (RWC, same thing), for private sellers anyway. Quote
dopedx Posted January 24, 2010 Author Report Posted January 24, 2010 Oh and don't you mean 'Wurrunt uf Futness'? :y: Haha... and my first stop in my new car will definatly be the feeesh and cheep shop for a scoop of cheeps... But thanks for the infomation guys. I think by the sounds of things its just easier to buy a car with rego and a rwc. I thought that was the case i just wanted to hear it from some real people not just reading it from internet sites hoping i hadnt missunderstood it. Will deffinatly be keeping an eye out on here (have been already) for a car hopefully someone will be able to help me out when the time comes. Will be looking for a job in construction as I'm a a qualified builder/chippie here if anyone had any good links or contacts. (sorry i know thats a bit off the subject of automotive. but worth a shot.) Cheers Again Sam Quote
