Am trying to check the timing on my 4AGE, and reading everywhere (including the 4AGE book), it says to set it at 10 degrees. No problem. The thing is, it also says to short out some terminals in the diagnostics plug, and apparently the idle will drop, set it to 10 degrees and unshort it, and it should rise up to at least 16 degrees. Mine... doesn't drop at all. Hmm, maybe my wiring isn't as perfect as I'd like them to be? Maybe might try setting it to 16 degrees and see what happens...

Found this about the TRD Formula Atlantic 4AGE, and in it, it says:

Ignition Timing: 28º BTDC @ 2,000rpm

28 degrees @ 2000RPM!!! That's... a lot of advance!

you'll probably find the advance is either mechanically locked and perhaps electronically controlled, or there's some really small amount of mech advance. if you increase the timing enough, the engine wants to spin backwards, as the spark is occuring so far BTDC, the flame front is trying to force the rising piston back down the bore, which is why 20 degrees on a stock engine doesnt work

Reading around (on GarageDori actually) it would seem that my TPS is not working, so the computer thinks the throttle is open all the time. Or at least, someone there had the exact same problem and that was what was wrong...
