Hey guys, go to set the timing on my car and after i drive it for say....10mins, the timing goes from ~8deg right up to 12deg

Sounds like your dizzy has a sloppy shaft or advance plate thingy.

Check if theres play in the dizzy shaft

Try marking the dizzy & block with white paint (typing whiteout) and see if the dizzy turns when you drive.

 

That wll tell you if its internal or external on the dizzy.

 

If its turning its dead easy, a clamp problem.

 

If its internal you'll have to strip the dizzy and look at its operation carefully. The advance plate as KENut says, or inside the vac advance diaphram.

Wait a minute - are you running the car at the same rev's both times?

 

Because if you tune it while it's cold and at low revs, then come back 10 minutes later and the idle speed has increased, you're dizzy may just be advancing normally.

 

Secondly, if you have slop in the dizzy, you wont find it just advances 4 degrees. You can pick sloppy timing chains etc because when you are trying to time it the mark jumps around all over the place.
