aquabat Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 Gday, First of all I am sorry if there is already a topic for this, but every search I do only seems to turn up results in relation to KE20 Front Brakes/ Struts/ Coilover conversions, etc. If there is such a topic, could you please point me in the right direction. I am looking for a cheap, easy brake conversion to do on a KE20 with a stock diff. It's only to be a temporary thing to have the car engineered (has a 4AGZE) and then registered, before I put the Borg Warner I have in it. A requirement to have the car engineered is the brakes being upgraded. I've been researching and intending on doing the R31 strut/ coilover and brake conversion in the front end but I just need something temporary for the rear end! If anyone has any information on easy, cheap-ish conversions they have used, I would greatly appreciate if you posted your knowledge! I intend on doing a technical conversion article when the time is appropriate. Quote
styler Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 (edited) as far as i know there isnt one, and if there was it would be a waste of time, money and effort to do it just for a quick fix anyway... best off doing it permanantly to the bigger better diff. the only thing i can think of in regards to it all is a slightly bigger drum setup but thats not really a significant upgrade of note. else if you must, a custom disc conversion would be new discs, custom brackets, rebuilt calipers, handbrake setup... thats IF you could come up with the right combination to mount and interface correctly that also passes engineering requirements with the forces of braking, geometry of the setup and mounting interfaces. aquabat Posted June 10, 2010 Author Report Posted June 10, 2010 Thanks for your response mate. The reason I don't want to put in the other diff for the time being is it's been shortened (900mm long, axle face to axle face) and it'll be put in with rear Spax adjustable coilovers, minitubbed to fit with quite wide wheels as you could imagine. I'm worried that the Engineer won't approve the engine conversion which is all I'm really worried about once he realises the extensive mods to the rear end setup. Therefore, I was just going to use a simple brake upgrade on the back, aswell as the R31 front brakes upgrade so the car can be engineered for the engine conversion and registered, and then pull the car off the road to do the rest of the modifications afterward. 13BT_KE20 Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 so after all this mucking around with an engineer your going to end up with a car that is still ILLEGAL because the later mods wouldnt of been approved by the engineer...... IMO you should just been honest with your engineer about the car and the end result will be a COMPLETELY LEGAL car. Doing it right the first time is always cheaper in the long run Cheers Quote
aquabat Posted June 10, 2010 Author Report Posted June 10, 2010 That is correct. Pretty sure minitubs can't even be approved? If someone knows otherwise, say so! Regardless of wether or not I am honest with the Engineer, if minitubs can't be approved then I'll obviously just end up with a car that cannot be registered. I know it would be cheaper to just put all the good gear in, in the first place but I'm pretty sure that these rear end modifications (mostly the minitubs) can't be engineered so I was prepared to fork out on brakes for the diff that is already in the car. 13BT_KE20 Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 it was my understanding it is legal provided you don't touch the chassis rails at all, but you should def check with ur engineer. don't worry i understand how hard it is to keep a car legal, i don't bother trying anymore. But it sounds you like are going to the effort to atleast try so well done Members rides thread? id love to check out ur car Cheers Quote
aquabat Posted June 11, 2010 Author Report Posted June 11, 2010 Well I might suss that out with him when I get home from work next week. I'm not really to worried about keeping it legal as I work out of town, so it won't get driven that much but I obviously just definetely need the engine engineered so i get can get registration sticker! I'll be sure to do a members ride article in the next few weeks mate. Probably not next week because I'll be coming off nightshift and I probably won't be over that until I am ready to go back to work the following week, lol. Quote
