SLW42 Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 (edited) Hello lads and ladies, i had a brain fart while i was looking at my 70 yesterday and wondering if it were at all possible to make the top of the rad support on top of where the radiator hole is in the beaver panel, removeable like they are on the ta22's and correct me if i'm wrong! early model rolla's, and still have it legal (I.E. insert bonnet pins). Like cut it out and make like a long L shaped plate/bracket about 3 or 4 mm thick to cover the gap with about 50mm over hang each side, if you understand what i mean?, to make it a shit load easier to do engine swaps, because i was thinking while i'm doing my turbo ca conversion, (insert brain fart here) the motors are known to have a few drama's, and taking the gearbox off on the ground sucks ass :) just to pull the motor out, and engine cranes are easy enough to borrow, and with that top rad support removeable it would make life a shitload easier. (end brain fart) What i'm trying to say is would it be legal? Edited July 7, 2010 by SLW42 Quote

To make it legal I'd imagine you'd have to get it engineered, as it would be part of the structural integrity of the car and thus affects crash test performance etc. Quote
7shades Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 I did exactly that to a KE70 I had once... Just cut the centre section out, put it back together with a couple of little bits of alloy and some bolts. Does make life significantly easier... Bear in mind you'll need to run the headlight wiring loom down the bottom though. I just left the bonnet release cable attached and threw the lot over to one side (including the radiator) when it was detached. Quote

Nor did DOT when I took it in to have the new engine number verified... :) The only difference from stock (that you could see) was 4 small bolt heads on the rad support panel. If I were to do it again, I'd cut the top support from another car, but 20mm longer on each side so I could just overlap it, drill a hole and use one bolt per side. Quote
love ke70 Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 mine passed a roadworthy like that, but i sorta lied and said it was covered by the blueplate :) i would talk to an engineer. its doable and worthwhile, but you could get a CA in and out with the box attached surely? i coulda got my 1g in and out if i got the front far enough off the ground but got the shits with it and got the grinder out Quote
philbey Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 structurally it's going to do bugger all, other than keep your front quarter panels the correct distance apart from one another. Quote
