Hello Folks,

 

didn't gain any knowledge last time I asked this, so I'll rephrase it. Could anyone PLEASE tell me whether the diffs fitted to KE70's have different ratios for 4 and 5 speed gearboxes? If so, can you live with a 5sp mated to a 4sp diff?

Appreciate any insights before start operating. Ta, MG.

If they Au KE70's they should have either a 4.1 or 4.3 ratio.

I think the 4.3 came in the sedan and the 4.1 in the auto(could be wrong)

 

If it is a Jap center, it should have a 3.9 ratio(there may be a 4.1 as well)

I think the panel vans and wagons had this ratio.

easy to tell, if the center pulls out the front, it's a Jap diff.

Thanks for that. Yes I have the Jap diff with the circular plate for attaching tail shaft. I believe the Borg Warners are square. If they didn't change the ratios for the 5sp box then I guess It's safe to do the same and not loose too much mid range pull. Ta MG.

Actually the autos have the 4.3 and the manuals have the higher gearing of the 4.1. The 5speed will not affect anything except 5th, as its just a 4spd with an overdrive fitted.

 

We have the auto diff with a 5speed, it cruises nicely at 3000-3400rpm, which is just around 100kph. 5th only drops the revs a few hundred rpm, so we change down before 3000rpm going up a hill or it makes no difference as the poor little 4K dies...

 

It would haul the manual diff no problem, but we had an auto car to start with.

i got a 82 ke70 flat front 4k, I'm 100% sure my gearbox was changed to a earlier 5speed one since they cut the hole foward about 2-3 inch ( correct me if I'm wrong but early GB were shorter?)

 

but anyway I'm not sure if the diff has been changed aswell but its a 3.89 ratio

The earlier 5 speed is the same box pretty much, just a different tail housing.

All you need to do is change the rear housing.

And a little bit of useless information, the shorter 5 speed was in production longer as they were fitted to the RWD starlets up to 86-87.

 

Thanks Mr Alt, yeah i couldn't remember which ratio was the auto.

this is where mine sits in a manual jun 82 ke70.

I'm sure it was original manual since it has the clutch cable cup on the fire wall,

not sure if it was 4spd or 5spd

Thanks all for the KE70 4sp to 5sp conversion info. I'll go ahead and drop in the lower milage engine complete with 5sp box. I gather tail shaft length can be got around with a bit of mix and match. Looks like tail shaft originally on the 5sp in the bent wagon will do the job anyway. Cheers, MG.
