foote Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 (edited) hey ya'll I'm tim, a noob here, from toowoomba, queensland. ive had my 1984 ke70 for about... 9 months now. the engine's starting to get a bit old, and needs a rebuild soon i be thinking as it is starting to leak a bit of oil here and there... not great amounts, but just enough to be noticable. anyway, i was thinking of putting a 4age or something similar in but eh, bugger it, i think ill just clean up the old 4K-C. this is also my first car, so I'm still learning about which bits do what and all that sorta stuff. so any suggestions? id be prepared to spend a fair bit (maybe like $1500 tops) and yea. the car is fully stock, engine wise, atm. i keep her running pretty well, as well as i know how anyways... but she's pretty good. also if anyone knows how good those fuel saver thingies like 'hiclone' and that are, give me a yell bout that too. goddamn fuel prices are dodge as. its not a question, its a general comment :-). one question, right. ta people tim Edited September 16, 2005 by foote Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 well, we have a guide for building a tough K motor in the faq, but if you're going to spend a grand and a half, i wouldn't bother with a 4k, just drop in a 4ag. you'll get more torque, just as much power, more potential, and use less fuel because it's efi no, those ripoff fuel things don't work Quote
foote Posted September 16, 2005 Author Report Posted September 16, 2005 (edited) righto... i was thinking 1500 all up on the car, not just on the powerplant. and i had a look at the 4K build-up website, and well it says everything you can do, not what you probably should do for cheap. come on, I'm a stoodent. and yea. ok. where should i start then? Super Jamie Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 compression test. if yours is under 160psi, buy a wrecker motor or watch the forums until a cheapie comes along. stick a cam in it, get a cheap carb, get extractors and an exhuast, spend the rest on suspension and tyres Quote
foote Posted September 16, 2005 Author Report Posted September 16, 2005 righto ill look into it tomorrow. whats so special about 160 psi? I'm guessing thats the 'if-its-below-this-its-farked' number? Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 spot on. a healthy engine should be up around 170psi Quote
SLOTH Snr Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 I think the first thing is what do you want from your car. Do you wnnt something that looks cool. Something that goes hard. Or one that is economical and reliable. read through as many threads as you can. Look at the other rides on this site. Research is your best friend and money saver. One possibility is have your motor refreshed and add twin carbs. By spending a bit of time shopping around WReckers and engine rebuilders you could probably do this for your $1500. FIND THE WAY YOU WANT TO GO. If in doubt ask. This i have learnt from rollaclub as i am only half a step ahead of you and if i had done more research at the start i would have saved a shitload of time a bit of cash. Best of luck Bill Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 and if i had done more research at the start i would have saved a shitload of time a bit of cash as would we all :D life is something which must be learned backwards, but lived forwards Quote
foote Posted September 16, 2005 Author Report Posted September 16, 2005 basically..... i really don't care too much about the looks; as long as its tidy, i don't care if there no body mods, apart from the essential. i wouldnt mind a good set of secondhand mags tho, but they can wait til lata. yea i just want a clean car that actually goes a bit, unlike it does atm. its a bit pitiful at the moment. and fuel consumption... hell its not going to get THAT much more, whatever i do to it. unless i chuck a v8 in it or something, it should be pretty good like it is atm. i get around 10L/100km round town, dunno what on the road. a bit better tho. as long as i keep getting you know something like that I'm pretty happy aye. so yea, power, for sure. so.... ill get it pressure tested, find out results, get a few opinions.... and maybe then spend some money. woohoo.... Super Jamie Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 i like your direction, neat looks, good motor, just clean and sensible. you sound like you'll get along just fine with the rest of us :D a good worked 4k gets around 10L/100km. mine would have been probably a low/flat 16 second car with a good tune, and could keep up with a civic till almost 200km/h, i could also keep up with a wrx if it stayed in 5th gear, and would hit 8500rpm reguarly. so you can get em to go pretty hard for such a small engine check out ebay and toymods for sale section, good place to find cheap mags. you can also get ones from the wreckers, from just about any old toyota or datsun. most factory wheels are 14x5.5". i reckon a set of 4 spoke celica/torago rims would look pretty hot on a ke70 Quote
oli Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 (edited) most factory wheels are 14x5.5". i reckon a set of 4 spoke celica/torago rims would look pretty hot on a ke70 hey Jamie Is the old rolla faq written by you? Anyway it's pretty sweet and thanks for sahring it with the rest of the old corolla community :D anyway I'm new here and ust bought my ke70 2 door and I'm liking it. Just a quick question - about rims (sorry to tag onto this thread!) I'm looking at buying some ma61 celica-supra rims 7x14 and wanted to know if these buggers will fit on a standard setup and also in the future when i drop it. I might be going for a little bit of a stretched tyre to help and possibly get the arches rolled jdm styleee any ideas? Edited September 16, 2005 by oli Quote
Teddy Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 Just some things to think about... When the Vehicle was designed and produced, it was designed to have *these type of wheels*, with *This amount of offsett* and... blar blar blar. With that said, when you go and put larger wheels onto your car, with different offset, heaver rims; etc - you change the points of where the suspension was designed to cope with standard wheels. In otherwords, you may now be putting alot of extra stress on other suspension related componetns, which might not be designed to take that much weight distrubition / to take any more than what they were designed for. (Controle Arms, Swaybar, all the bushes that hold them together, hell, even the shock's and springs would be slightly effected) Depending on how far out you go aposed to origional specifications, will depend on how excessive the wear is on components that wouldnt nornally wear at that rate with standard specification wheels on the vehicle. I'm Guilty of it tho, ive got excessively large dished wheels on my car, which stick out and fill the guards quite nicely. Because of this, ive got a larger track surface area (i think they call it that), with completly stock suspension, and it has cutt out alot of body roll, and made it handel a bit better. ...look under my car tho, and most of the suspension bushses are floged out. To what i know, its not something that happens *flash* like that, but other things to think about also is the fuel economy of the car, will it rub up under the guard, the wheel alignment, do they sit in the guards stil, is it legal in your area ? We only covered this section breifly in tafe, because i buged the teacher to tell me why putting large rims on cars wasnt advisiable from a qualified mehanics point of view. (we cover this in 3rd year, pretty god dam advanced by the sounds of it -> but thats all i know..) Hope its helped a bit ! Ted Quote
oli Posted September 16, 2005 Report Posted September 16, 2005 (edited) hmm........ I see your point. I guess with a car thats like over 20 years old and on the same original suspension parts (can only assume as it's only done 48k miles) maybe it's wiser to stick with 13's and maybe 6 inch wide to minimise any additional stress.....its just sooo hard to find rims in the uk with a 4x114.3 pcd!!!!! this was my inspiration!! awesome dish and rimmage........... :D Edited September 16, 2005 by oli Quote
Super Jamie Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 yeah, i wrote the faq. i've since moved it over to this site, where it's in wiki format, so everyone can contribute! :D i'm pretty sure supra 14x7s do fit on a stock ke3/5/7 corolla. you'd have to try it and see for yourself to confirm tho. maybe somebody on toymods has done it Quote
rollered Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 stock supra rims fit. but i think maybe on the back u need spacers, cus they rub the struts. look over on toymods (www.toymods.org.au) I'm pretty sure people have chucked those rims on their ke70-hell i was even looking at a pair for mine. keep-it-real!
