I've been a little slack and forgot to post the progress from last week, so this week I'll do two posts this week...

Engine Out Of KE70

Two weeks ago we took the 5k out of the KE70. It all went relatively smooth. We were smart enough this time to start early, so we didn't end up working in the dark.

When we drained the water from the radiator it was as you would expect the water from an engine that hadn't run in quite a while to be.. quite dirty.

The pipe from the heater core basically shredded itself as we disconnected the hose.

The 5k has now been sold of to some local member who are going to clean it up and put it into their KE55

As you would expect the front of the car is sitting even higher now... and it's so like that J Riftin was able to lift the front wheel off clear off the ground.

Stripping The AE86

Yesterday we stripped the last of the bits from the AE86. Luckily Bob and KENut dropped by to get me a J Riftin a hand.

Basically everything that we could take off we did (as long as it wasn't too badly damage), this included a mountain of trim, taillights, front crossmember/suspension, rear suspension, exhaust, etc etc. By the time we were finished it was basically just a shell. It was a little sad to see the old girl like that, especially when we rolled her onto her side to help us get better access to parts. The shell will be towed away over the next couple of days. Thus ends the story of the mighty 86 :( I'm going to keep looking ahead and moving on, but all always remember the good times.

Lots of little bits and pieces will go onto the 70, become spares for J Riftin and Bob or be sold/thrown away. Some of the bits and pieces aren't usable anymore due to the damage; the steering rack is probably screwed (and it's not worth risking it) and when we got the car on it's side we realised that the diff/axel is actually bent.

Since the S series diff was bent we will have to look at something else for the KE70 (probably a T series, which will require a different tailshaft).

Over the next couple of weeks we will start prepping the KE70 to receive the engine and fitting various parts. There are also a couple of spots on the 70 that will probably be spot welded (to give the car some extra rigidity). We well also have to do the hydraulic clutch/pedal box conversion, source some extractors for the 20v and some trumpet/velocity stacks.

It's all slowly moving along.

Nah, the 5k only had a k40, but that was sold of with the engine. Back a couple of years ago when we were looking for the k50 for my ke55 they were a little tricky to come by, in the end we ended up finding one in a ke30 with a 7k attached :) I guess you just have to keep you eyes open...

Since the 20v was in an 86 previously a lot of the hard work has already been done (converting the engine to RWD, wiring etc). But there is still lots of stuff that needs to be done (playing round with crossmembers, diffs, suspension/steering, fuel line etc). Stay tuned!

  • 4 weeks later...

Been a bit quite on this one lately. Lots of other stuff happening (motorkhanaing in my Integra, going on cruises with the local Celica club).

At the moment I'm just tracking down some parts that we need and looking at getting some other goodies....

Parts I need:

AE71 T50 Crossmember (think I've tracked one down, deciding on whether to get that or just try to mod the AE86 one).

4AGE 20v ST Velocity Stacks. I've found a place that has some for a very reasonable price, but just trying to work out what size I can fit in the 70 (there are issues with some of the longer ones hitting the brake booster).

4AGE 20v ST extractors. (PM'd a business on AE86DC but haven't heard anything back).

I also need to sort out either a diff (thinking maybe a T series) or an AE71 tailshaft.

Couple of things I'm looking at:

Lockable bonnet pins/latch

Hydraulic handbrake.

Coilovers/adjustable camber tops (the struts from the 86 are pretty rooted and I want a decent set up in the front end). Been looking at some second hand sets, but I'm starting to lean towards a new AJPS set (as the price is quite decent) and then putting on some adjustable tops.

Will probably put in an order later this week for the trumpets, bonnet latch and handbrake.

The next step will be installing the pedal box, we were going to do this on the weekend, but the mate that's helping me with the project (as I'm mechanically retarded and the car is at his house) is going to Sydney to get some sweet new parts for his 86. Next weekend I'm hopefully driving in the local khanacross :D

Updates! (Suspension, Pedalbox, Extrators and Bit's and Pieces).

Well it's been almost a month since my last post (been a bit slack). We've progressed quite a bit on the 70.

I've managed to get a couple of new parts:

  • 4-1 20v 4AGE Extractors (3inchs at the end)
  • Lockable bonnet pins
  • Hydraulic Handbrake
  • AE71 Gearbox crossmember

Along with that maxhag also got a new socket set (so hopefully we should have enough tools now) and I got a new hydraulic jack.

Front Suspension

We took all of the front suspension bits (struts, steering rack and engine crossmember) off my old AE86 ready to go onto the KE70. Was a little bit of a hassle getting it all set up (had to borrow a rattle gun in the end to remove the strut tops). In the end we used all of the AE86 front end, but used to KE70 strut tops (as using the AE86 ones on a KE70 gives bad castor), the KE70 top hats (normally you would use the 86 hats if you were using 86 springs) and some completely random springs that were in the shed (they looked low enough and were a lot stiffer than what was on the AE86 I had).

Big thanks to KENut and maxhag for helping out.

Now the car has front wheels on again (just stole a set of maxhags 15inch works) and it's still sitting a little high. Hopefully the weight of the engine once it's in will drop it down low enough. We still need to put the 6kg AJPS springs in the rear.

Pedalbox

Yesterday we had the.... fun... experience of trying to install the pedalbox. Was quite tricky to get it in there. Luckily we had ripped out lots of dash and it didn't really matter if anything broke. It would be a real pain if you were trying to do it on an intact car and put it all back together. We still have to install the clutch master cylinder and bolt some stuff back in.

  • 1 month later...

Ok, Long overdue for an update.

Due to various reasons, things have become slow over the last month or two. But the build is now back on track.

So where are we, Well Sloth (car owner) has been away, travelling the countryside, enjoying himself, I have been slaving away, building his car...... Haha, just kidding, I love working on Toyotas, and anyway, I have never done the KE70 --> 4AGE conversion before, and I am doing not one, but 2 of my own KE70 --> 4AGE converions after this one is done. So, this will teach myself how to do it, and how/if it can be done better the next time round....

So, I have replaced the heater core. The old one was totally rooted. The outlets were so coroded, they, well, just crumbled to pieces.

Here is a pic of the old one, and the new used one we received from KEnut -

I have also sorted out the engine loom wiring for the 20V. The loom is in, and wired to the shell.....

Now, I am currently preparing the motor and gearbox to be dropped into the car. As this is going to be a car for motorsport, and not comfort, I am removing the bulky Air Con components. The motor is getting a clean up, should be dropped into the car tomorrow.

Motor with Air con -

Also finished bolting in the AE71 pedal box. I must say, the hardest/most annoying part of the conversion so far is the pedal box installation. Not so much the actual installing of it, but having to pull the whole dash (and more) out to get access to remove/install the pedal box. I am not looking forward to doing it 2 more times.......
