March 28, 201115 yr comment_513318 has anyone ever done or heard of some one running a worked 4kc motor on dedicated gas due to higher octane. this has now become one of my maybe to do options. Report
March 29, 201115 yr comment_513329 Why? Although gas has a higher octane rating it produces less power. It's more of a downgrade if anything. Unless ofcourse you go to electronic injection and add a turbo you won't really see a gain. If you want high octane just run some avgas or add octane boost to 98 unleaded. Oh and it's not going to be a cheap option either. Cost vs benifits will be crap. Trust me, if this was a great option everyone would be doing it. Report

March 29, 201115 yr comment_513373 everyone started slapping Gas Research carbies on their cars (especially Rotors) back 10-12 years ago but then they got bored of it. Gas allows you to run a higher compression ratio than petrol, and more comp = more efficient = moar powah. Report
March 30, 201115 yr comment_513575 I assume you plan on running a mixer system? I think it is a worthwhile option if you can be bothered setting it up, and really should't be written off as quickly as everyone suggests. Yes if you use a mixer system you will lose a bit of power over a petrol setup, but if it's not an all out race motor where every kw counts who cares? For a street car wouldn't you rather get heaps of driving at a cheap price, rather than pay a large fuel bill for a little more power? If you setup the cam/ignition to suit there is no reason why it can't be a pretty decent motor that will cost you bugger all to run. Another consideration is the rebate available. It can be far more expensive to get a decent set of sideys setup, than put on a dedicated gas system with a rebate. If you were getting really serious then you could consider a liquid injection setup, which would actually pickup power over petrol! But this would not be cheap. Also if you are worried about the power figures, you could always run a turbo setup... IMO it is definitely worth the thought, do something different! :) Edited March 30, 201115 yr by Doogs Report
March 30, 201115 yr comment_513579 Toyota Forklift carby, Gas setup. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-TOYOTA-FORKLIFT-CARBURETOR-GAS-5K-5F610-18-/310173229721?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4837c3e299 It not that the setup won't be beneficial, but cost vs outcome is my argument point. You will have to do the whole thing. Not just the engine but the fuel lines, tank, filler, etc. In the end you could drop in a 4AGE and totally blow away the gassed 4k in performance and efficiency. Running gas isn't that mutch more efficient, addmitently a dedicated gas setup would run really well but you still have to use more gas than you would petrol to get anywhere. For a couple of dollars savings at the bowser and a little bit of power increase it's not worth the money you will spend setting it up. I'm not against the idea (a mate at work gas a dedicated 5L V8 setup and it is awesome!) but like I said cost vs outcome. If it is different you want go ahead, it would be a great cruiser and a cheaper runner. Report
March 30, 201115 yr Author comment_513595 i appreciate the feedback you have all given me. due to starting cost, and the 6 months before the rebate money is back in my pocket, seems that no gas will be going into the rolla. going to save my pennys and just work the 4k with a guy down here in launceston. we are hopping to get about 135hp out of the old girl. he has worked on toyotas for over 30 years and sees my ke55 as a clean canvas. March 30, 201115 yr comment_513597 135hp at the fly is a lot for a little 4K NA motor. That's what most of the race prepped 3K's seem to make. My 5K is just shy of 100hp at the wheels, so I'm guessing around the 120 mark at the fly. Lots of cam and a shitload of compression. Very keen to see your build. Not a lot of people are building tough NA K motors, they just talk about it. Report
March 30, 201115 yr comment_513607 My be worth doing a search for "loupee"s project thead. turbo 5k running straight gas and 15-16 odd psi. Report
