rjenman
what the hell is this thing The thing in the second picture. It's attached to the bottom of the block and pokes out into the sump. I'm guessing something to do with oil. Name the part so i can google it? :harhar: Cheers
ancullen
Isn't that the oil pickup?
irokin
Isn't that the oil pickup? and pump... what do you need to google it for :harhar:
rjenman
because google is more informative than most people except for you guys i guess, feel free to explain if you can be bothered :harhar:
Super Jamie
this is called an "oil pump" it uses a positive displacement vane to suck oil from the sump, and supply it at high pressure to the oil galleries of the engine, where it is transported to important places such as crank bearing surfaces, the rockers, and inside the timing cover the oil pump is driven by a keyway that the bottom of the distributor slots into. the distributor is driven by a worm gear off the camshaft. the camshaft is driven via chain from the crankshaft. the crankshaft is put in motion either by the pistons going up and down due to combustion, or because the starter motor is spinning the flywheel, which is also joined to the crankshaft. the idea being that any time the engine is running, the oil pump should also be running the large net thing on the bottom of the pickup is so that you can drop bolts, sockets, jewellery, etc into the sump and it won't block flow to the pump and kill the engine
Super Jamie
if you undo the three bolts, you can open the pump up and sit there scratching your head trying to figure out how it works. i don't understand the physics behind it either, but it works so who cares the snout off to the side with the split pin in it contains the relief spring i speak of in the tough K motor guide. if you remove this split pin, there is a cup containing the spring. put a nut or some washers in there about 2-3mm thick (no more) and put it back together, your engine will now run about 10psi higher oil pressure, which is good for reliability at high rpm there has been talk of rebuilding celica pump vanes inside K pumps for more oil pump goodness, but nobody i know has ever done it. you'd need a T motor pump, as R motor pumps have the same sized internals as K motor pumps
Super Jamie
all that is specific to K engine pumps too, other designs of engine have different ways of driving the pump and different positions, and there are even different designs (ie: not single vane positive displacement) for example, a nissan RB engine drives its' pump directly off a gear which is mounted on flat spots machined onto the nose of the crankshaft
ronald_loulan
Its an oil screen with the pump....(i think) :harhar:
