dysolve Posted December 3, 2005 Report Posted December 3, 2005 Just asking the question, as i started making home brew last x-mas i have made four batchs of beer and a batch of sarsparilla. the sars was 9% but it smelt like rotten egg. my first batch of beer was straight coopers stuff with about 6% my second batch never fermented properly so i threw it out then i went to the local home brew shop and started making my own mixes.. and they are cool, i use special sugars and yeasts and add them to special mixes.. my last beer was a stella copy but it was over 10% and i left it for two months before drinking it.. two 750ml bottles and i nearly pastout LOL if any body has question let me know i will ask the guy at the local shop, the guy is really good. i found one little trick but.. only use the plastic bottles once, i have found that the head on the second batch is never as good with use bottles Quote

Felix Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 i bought a couple of coopers kits. not bad at all. for your first brew you get 2 1/2 cartons worth, for $70. not bad when you pay near $35 a carton normally. the taste improves with time, try to leave at least 3 weeks after bottling. with the bottles dysolve, how clean were they second time around? my missus' boss is into home brew bigtime, and he never had problems reusing plastic bottles. he quotes "cleanliness is next to godliness, when it comes to home brew". i don't have much prior experience with beer brewing, but spent a bit of time in a winery, so know how important it is to keep everything clean. i rinse all my bottles several times after finishing them with hot water, and will bleach each before the next brew. as i am on tank water, i boil or will put all my water through a water purifier. have to bottle my second batch tomorrow. will get a mid35 brew tomorrow, to go down. it is supposed to taste much the same as carlton midstrength, although i will be aiming for a bit more than 3.5% :P also have a ginger beer i will put down in my other keg, which i will be making alcoholic. dysolve Posted December 6, 2005 Author Report Posted December 6, 2005 I never use soap anywhere near my home brew gear, I use a baby bottle sterilizer after u have used a bottle brush and an iodine mix, works great for the sedimenter but not the bottles, I beer still tastes great but the there is little or no head on it. Dysolve, you didn't clean the bottles with detergent / washing soap after the first time did you? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question, but it is a known fact that you never wash beer glasses with detergent because it means you will never have a decent head on a glass of beer after you do. Beer glasses should be kept in the freezer and never cleaned with detergent. I assume that the plastic homebrew bottles should be the same :D Quote
Dan Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 Lecure (I think thats how you spell it), its bloody deadly when you make it in home-brew... I think I had about 4 shots of some stronger stuff and I just wanted to pass out... Quote
