Trev Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 help, struggling to undo the righthand drive shaft nut. will not budge.i take it is an anticlockwise removal. also, once undone, will the drive shaft just pull out from both ends? any help greatly appreciated eric Anticlockwise removal, better off undoing the hub from either one of the locations on the bottom (ball joint nut or ball joint bolts), turn wheel to the left to get more outwards room on the hub and pull it out and off of the cv joint. Now turn the wheel to the right so that the hub is out of your way. Now you can pull the shaft out, (if it is a manual you will lose gearbox oil, auto's are normally fairly good unless someone has ovr filled them) if you have the 6 bolt flange then undo that, if you have the splined bell then do the followin - put a pry bar between gearbox and driveshaft bell and force it out. What is the reason for needing to pull the shaft out? Quote

What is the reason for needing to pull the shaft out? the cv joint has broken at the gearbox end, so no drive at all. you can see the bell turn when trying to drive. have had another crack at trying to undo the nut no success, keep bending the bar, so maybe some heat now.thanks for your advice Quote

ericcs Posted January 18, 2012 Author Report Posted January 18, 2012 got the shaft out, and found out the 3bearing knuckle inside the bell almost slid off the spline. it appears to have been gripping by only about 5mm then let go. is the knuckle supposed to be pressed on never to move again? i was able to lightly tap it on and off. also, the knuckle spline does not go all the way on on side, does this side go on first over the shaft? Trev Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 No, they are slid on (sometimes requiring a hammer and punch) and a circlip on the end of the shaft holds it, the section that has the cut out goes onto the shaft 1st, got any pics of the shaft? Quote
ericcs Posted January 18, 2012 Author Report Posted January 18, 2012 (edited) thanks for your advice trev. it appears this drive shaft has been a replacement at some stage, and there is no sign of any circlip. as mentioned, the end of the shaft is ground off, so no chance off fitting a circlip now. cheers eric Edited January 19, 2012 by ericcs Quote
Trev Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 Yeah the end is definitely chewed away, I got you a pic today (Chery shaft so same same but different): Quote
ericcs Posted January 19, 2012 Author Report Posted January 19, 2012 looks like a new one is required, short of welding a washer on the end to hold the knuckle on. thanks again for your help trev Quote

clubby2084 Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 I just bought 2 x recond shafts for my AE82. $75 per shaft. Hell, it was cheaper then paying someone to replace the boots. Quote

clubby2084 Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 Unless they have new outer joints all you have basically paid for is a boot replacement. They said they were "remanufactured shafts including new outers using imported parts" (so, probably made of cheese or something). Quote
