Rolla__Boy Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 It takes under an hour for one person to pull a manual gearbox out of a corolla, and that is on dirt in a backyard. On a hoist it just gets easier....Paying for things like this is a joke, as Nick said...you could buy 10 corolla's for $1800 Quote
love ke70 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 coupedrolla: is this your daily driver? coz if not you could do the work yourself, its not gonna be excruciatingly hard, and the tools you buy are an investment. depends how practical you are and how keen you to give it a go tho i spose, if i had more experience i would offer to do it, but it would be my first one, so i don't really wanna do it for someone else b4 ive done it for myself Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 If all goes well, I am buying a KE55 hardtop in excellent condition with rego for $600 soon....$1000 should get you an awesome one Quote
Felix Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 :) nice. stuff mechanics, ripoff merchants. definitely worthwhile investing in tools and a workshop manual...even just for diy servicing. Quote
Dan Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 First of all; sorry about mistaking your post coupedcorolla, I thought you meant that your engine was f@$ked. Sorry! Secondly, does anyone know what mechanics actually get paid? Sweet f@$k all. So they're not so much of a ripoff merchant. Don't stereotype mechanics like some of them are, just remember that they are virtually at the bottom of the automotive foodchain. Yes that quote he got was a ripoff. That said I do think its a better option to invest in tools and do it yourself; and by tools, i don't mean piece of shit Supercheap Auto ones, that break/snap/bend within 5 minutes. Quote
love ke70 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 what they get paid depends on how much they charge :) the one that gave this quote prob gets paid rather nicely used car sales men are at the bottom of the food chain, and theres big leap to whoever comes next hehe Quote
Felix Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 generally if you take your car to a mechanic they are at a mechanical workshop. it is the mechanical workshops that are the ripoff. they charge about $50 an hour then pay the qualified mechanics about $15 an hour. Quote
love ke70 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 i agree with u on the tools dan, a good socket set is an absolute must when workin on cars Quote
Dan Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 Na, I've got mates that work as mechanics, and my old man worked as one; I know lots of em, and I can tell you that the average mechanics gets paid minimum wage; barely enough to live. Actually Felix just hit the nail on the head. Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 I still think $300 to pull one gearbox out of a corolla is a rip off. And I don't see why mechanics deserve much more than minimum wage? They are not doing a very high skilled job (general mechanics I am refering to) oil changes, brake pads, engine swaps, gearbox swaps, tune ups. In reality none of it is very hard, so I don't see why they should earn huge money. Obviously it is an essential service, as there is a huge percentage of the general public that don't ever want to learn to do stuff them selves, but you see people pay $800 for a service...I mean seriously Quote
love ke70 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 owell, it keeps people in jobs Quote
