So I noticed just the other day that if my engines running, and i turn the fan on hot, coolant drips from somewhere behind the dash, right behind the fan controls and what not. Took a look around there and couldn't see anything obvious, but I'm hoping someone will know something I don't, and be able to save me some $$$ by not having to get the mechanic down.

Cheers.

It'll be the heater core. Either the core is leaking or the piping is. you can just reroute your heater hoses for a quick fix but you will have no heater.

edit: DAMN YOU BLZBUB!!!

you have pretty much summed it up already, you just need to dig deeper.

when you turn the fan to "hot" the following occurs:

coolant enters your car via a hole in the fire wall, at the firewall is a tap, when you turn the thing to "blow hot air" mode, it opens this tap, allowing water to flow.

once it gets into your interiour it goes into a little radiator.

behind this radiator is a fan.

in front of this radiator is a pipe.

this pipe goes to your vents.

the fan blows air through the radiator, heats up the air, blows it through the pipes, and up through vents to keep you and your passengers warm.

once the water has gone through the radiator, it goes back out through the firewall, back into your engine.

So, where do you think the water is leaking from?

For the short term, cut the hoses off in the engine bay and plug them/connect to recirc.

It's most likely your core, you will need to rip it out and get it fixed. Shouldn't be expensive.

I had a mate whose heater core ruptured (in a KE38) and in the middle of traffic his car is filled with steam and he couldn't see.

Thanks everyone, will be rerouting the heater tap tomorrow until I get a chance to take a look under the dash.
