Ke70 Wags Build

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, thought id share with you a project I've been working on for the past 3 years.

It all started when i turned 14. All i focused on at that point was that i could get my driving license in less than one year. So at the time my old man thought it'd be a good idea for me to get my first car and do it up a little in time to get my learners. And also get to know further about cars etc. So i hoped on trade me and started my quest for my first car.

I looked at multiple options as my first car starting at honda civic's (yes i know, wtf was i thinking???) right through to Subaru impreza's. After not having much luck in finding a cheapy, as only having an after school job meant that money wasnt that flash. So then i started looking at reg on hold cars and came across a toyota corolla ke72 high roof station wagon for $400. Seemed legit reg on hold, $400, good runner, everything there to put back together (was getting ready for paint), so i arranged a viewing time and went up the following weekend. When i first saw it i was in shock as it looked not near as close as it did in the photo's or description. But as i really wanted a car and i had the money all it needed (as so it seemed) is a bit of tlc, so i gave the man the $400, started it up and drove it onto the trailer for the hour long trip back home.

After having a much more intense close up look once back at home i noticed a few spot's of surface rust in the roof, thought no biggy went and had a look on the otherside and the same thing. Got the wire brush drill out and SHIT! both side's of the roof fully caked in with bog hiding the rust. There was no point in trying to fix it as it was pretty bad and found more in other areas of the car. Over the next couple weeks i sold the 4k and k50 for $250 and triangle look a like modgies for $180. I made my money back so looked for another one. My cousin later found one in a junk yard out in the wope wope's and ended up swaping the ke72 for a ke70 wagon and $300. this time i made sure i had a real good look and it was in much better shape. tho it didnt come with motor box or interior but i did keep all the interior from the 72 and i also had a 4age bluetop from one of my old man donor ae82.

So anyway that's a bit of my story. here's a few picture's to show what i started with.307043_236646686383015_1067043624_n.jpg

Okay so first thing i started to do once i got my second wagon i started prepping the engine bay for paint. And once again after having and even closer look it looked as though it had been in a accident as the radiator support panel was all rippled and the front crossmember was twisted. So i went back out to were i picked up my current wagon and chopped the radiator support panel and front crossmember off the 72 to spot weld back onto my 70. once i got all that off my 70 it turned out that one of the chassi rails was out further to one side by 20mm. so then another trip out to the farm to chop off the chassi rails. once we finished chopping stuff off there was pretty much nothing left of the 72 so i suppose the owner would have crushed it.

Once i spot welded all that on bog it up sanded then undercoated, it was ready for blacccccccccccck. At the time i was unsure as what colour to paint it so i thought black could go with any colour really.

Once that was painted i scored an ae86 crossmember off trade me along with and ae86 radiator, hydro clutch pedal box and radiator mounts.

Gave the crossmember's and castor arm mounts a lick off paint and customized the ke70 pedal box by adding the ae86 hydro to the side of it pretty much.

Right so next on the to do list was sourcing engine bits to make my 4age from fwd to rwd. Pretty much after a period of 6 months searching on trademe for all the bits, i found all that was needed including a t50 22 spline with a 1000km old 4 puk excedy clutch kit and front half of driveshaft for $750.

In that time i didnt do much as i was at school most of time other than buying kyb shock inserts and cobra superlows. Gave the struts a coat of black while they were out of the car.

once all the front suspension was freshened up i bought some super pro bushes to stiffen her up a bit.

So then after i fitted the engine i started to do some panel work. the 70 came with a ugly as slant front so i wanted to get rid of that and put a twin headlight conversion in place. At first i was unaware as to how hard it is to find all the bits necessary front the OO=====OO, so i got rid of the slant (didnt bother selling it just chucked it out) and sourced some parts off trademe (i love trademe lol). after buying two bonnet's believing to be twin headlight i opted to buy a brand new repo one. It wasnt a bad fit but it could have been better. And couldnt find twin head valance so bought a repo one too. In total it took me a little over 2 years to find it all (yea i know what ya thinking "f#$k that") but once i had all the parts and put it all on the car it looked awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!.

New bonnet

New valance

Second hand genuine recessed guards (had holes from bolt on flares, bloody bogans!)

New bumper

New guard indicators

New bumper indicators

New park lights (from Malaysia)

Second hand genuine buckets

New bezels and grill

Second hand genuine corolla badge

And i kept the 72 wiper tray panel as it had the little bump on it that follows the bonnet

Heres a couple pics of test fitting

In between finding the twin head parts i did some body work and made a front lip out of my 72 old valance

Sneeky wee shot i took when i was bored one day

537672_491354140912267_632789174_n.jpg

so then after i sorted my twin head stuff and acquired some wheels i got stuck into the body work. Got rid of all the green primer as that was just to keep the bare metal from rusting and put some all purpose spray gun primer on.

So after about 3 months of pottering away at the body work i finally got it all done ready for paint biggrin.png bought some 2k paint. got a paint code of a mates ae85 and got the same factory red colour but in 2k. My old mans work mate use to be a qualified spray painter not long ago so i got him to paint her up for me cheap smile.png he did a great job! but as i did it in the garage i was always running the risk of a gust of wind putting crap into the paint and which it did in a few place's. Its not bad so we can buff it out thank god!

Had to get some new disc rotors as it was cheaper just to get new ones rather than get them machined

so that's it pretty much, this is where i am at the moment just putting the exterior back together now then ready to get carpeted and wired up. will keep you guys updated.
