Hi

I have just bought a brand new distributor but have a few questions

1. does this have a built in igniter

2. It has 2 wires one black and white the other brown how do I wire it up ?

3. What coil would you recommend

Thanks in advance

Loz

yes, igniter is there-

Brown goes to coil -ve

Black/white goes to ballast, ignition key side.

writeup about it here-

good luck!

Coil? Well I believe you want something for an electronic ignition. But good luck. Good information is thin and far between.

I'll recommend something with a primary resistance between 1.4 & 3.0 ohms and secondary resistance between 7 & 11.0 kohms just to be safe.

I'm currently using a Bosch GT40 but the secondary resistance is high at 17 kohms. Whilst this coil will never place to much current demand on the igniter, it is limited in it's voltage output.

But in saying that, despite a manufacturers advertised voltage output, a coil will only discharge enough voltage to jump the plug gap. Whether is requires 8000 volts or 30000 volts is dependant on cylinder pressure, engine load, fuel mixture and so on.

Thanks for the replies

Do I need an external ballast resistor or could I use a coil with a built in resistor

Th car is a lotus 7 replica with a 4k engine T50 gearbox I want to keep the engine bay minimal

You want a coil that does not require a ballast resistor.

Q. What is the difference between SU12 and SU12R and GT40 and GT40R?

A. The ignition coils with the R suffix are designed to be used in conjunction

with a Ballast resistor usually around 1.8 ohms in value. This provides current

limiting for the coil. The non R suffixed coils operate on 12 Volts directly.

Q. Can I use a GT40RT or similar coil on my electronic ignition system?

A. No, not as a general rule. The coil is designed to operate in a contact breaker

points system. These coils have a high back voltage. This high voltage can

stress the driver transistor on some electronic modules. Bosch EK conversion

kits are designed to handle this voltage.

• Q. Can I use an electronic coil in a vehicle with points?

A. No. Electronic coils have very low primary resistance around 0.4 ohms.

This will cause very high current (28A) to flow through the points and

associated wiring causing damage. Electronic coils require an electronic

control module to control coil primary current and dwell time.

Gav knows more about this than me, I just hooked the electronic dizzy up to my stock factory coil and used the ballast as normal. Maybe I'm about to blow the electronics up...

This will add to the general confusion...
