Cut springs are never safe. I'm completely disgusted and appauled by the number of people who think its all rosy to modify their cars like this. Its illegal for a very very good reason. What happens when everything doesnt go right? I remember seeing a story about a young man in sydney who had cut springs in his car (It was a laser or similar 80s kind of fwd car). He was acting a bit silly on a freeway when he clipped another car. The car he clipped spun and crashed killing the driver (a young female). He kept on driving. The police tracked him down some days later with the help of witnesses and impounded his car. The forensics team went over the car finding evidence showing that he had clipped the other car and that he had cut springs. With this and the witness information they charged him with Manslaughter and he went to jail. He was under 20.

Him clipping another car had nothing to do with cut springs.

Having one inch too wide wheels is illegal too, but you don't seem to care about that.

It has everything to do with cut springs. It was on a sweeping corner at 110km/h. don't try to defend them, if youre stupid enough to use them, fine, kill yourself but don't go spreading bad advice.

usefull practical experiance here, cut springs don't sit square on the strut top, if you have taken to much off and they are loose they can (and have) "bounced" off their perch, if the fact that your car has suddenly smashed to the ground isnt scary enough the cut end of the spring WILL go straight through the side wall of you tyre and we all know how thats going to end when a front tyre blows at speed

that being said, i have cut springs in my '55 and regularly get it airborn (20 min long dirt driveway) but I'm an idiot with little to live for but the adrenalin rush

(and I'm lifting it back up because to many other parts are breaking from the rough ride)

I'm going to have to jump on the ban wagon here. Being a qualified mechanic cutting your springs has to be the worst idea that anyone modifying cars can ever consider. There are a few other options that can be followed that are alot safer than chopping springs. The most common ive heard of is taking your springs to a suspension specialist who will compound the spring so that you keep the stuctural intergtiy of the spring in place while still gaining the same effect. This i have heard costs as little as 50 AUSD. A small price to pay for your and other drivers safety. As far as lowering the car 3 inches a good idea would be to check with your local roads authority to make sure this is road legal, as the defect will end up costing more that getting the car lowered in the first place.

cheers

Peter
