Today i bought a skyline R31 diff to replace the standard rolla diff. It has 3.89 gearing and will be fitted with a LSD center or spool. Started grinding off exess mounts that are not needed and will be welding the spring locater from the old diff. Heres some pix and clearance pix of the bay. note i need to still raise the passenger side mount a bit to level the engine and tranny.
They came off the VX series statesman and all i done was cut and connect the positive and negative wires. I then just double sided taped them onto the guards...
Anyway I'm taking the auto to get a shift kit put in tonight. He is also going to replace the oil pump in the tranny so it shifts harder. The tranny will get serviced and any bands that need replacing will be replaced. I don't want the auto coming out for a while once its in so its better i do this now. The mounts will be tackled this weekend providing it doesnt rain. And if it does, well i guess i might have to put a tarp up. Once the mounts are done and tranny x member done this weekend then all i need to do is measure up the length of the tailshaft so i can get that made to suit. Then next weekend will be dedicated to spraying the bay and running the wiring loom. And if ive got time ill slap the running gear in too. See what happens ay.
Ok today we ripped the running gear out of the VP. Didnt take long but the only problem was trying to move the engine crane on the grass haha. Anyway we took the tank out too and set it all up on the ground and started the engine. Theres some footage on youtube if ya interested...
i don't think i should have a problem with that wire because i only got rid of wiring that i didnt need from the dash, heater, lights etc. Anythin that wasnt involved with that is still plugged in. Umm i only noticed 1 oxy sensor. Why is that?
Ok today i finished stripping the loom. I Passed it all through the firewall with the fusebox as well. Ran it back in the car and it still starts which was the plan. So now the engines ready to come out with the stripped loom attatched so this will make life alot easier for when it comes to wiring it in the corolla. Basically i just have to rewire it to my ignition barrel and away it goes. One other thing though, a few of you guys were saying that i can just put a manual speedo cable in the tranny. Does the corolla one fit. If not which car does it come out of?
Ok ive finally got off my ass to start stripping the VP. Ripped the dash out to locate the loom and commenced stripping away useless wiring that i don't need. Making sure the car starts each time wires are cut to make the job easier for the install into the rolla. Heres just a few pix of the process to show ya just how messy it can be.
all up ive spent $2500 thats everything, from the purchase of the shell, to rego, paint (approx $700) rims tyres the lot. So ye its definately a budget car project but I'm saving money because 90% of the work is done myself
have you ever thought that using the 3k carby might be ya problem with power at to me the 4k carby looks alot bigger. Also a 3k carby is much older therefore more prone to wear which could cause overguelling siyuations. I recently bought a secondhand carby from the wreckers because i had some similar problems and the replacement seems to have no dramas at all. One thing i learnt was to never touch the little screw things on the carby because i could never get the thing running right after i did with the old one.
cheers
Pat
Well i havent posted here for a bit. Ive recently sold the 20 to my cousin because i ended up buying a v6 for my other rolla. Ill still post up the process here of the step by step way were gonna make this rust bucket a cruiser. Heres just a few pix of how we've stripped the car and started on repairs. The bootlid definately needs to be thrown out lol.
haha rolla boy, its just that i don't have the cash to put some awesome engine in at the moment and i need power. I'm going crazyyyy lol. eventually ill put the sr20det in but for now this will do
ah ok sweet, wasnt sure if that thermo would fit. I might just leave my 55 diff in for now cos don't have the cash to get a better one shortened. I was thinking R31 shortened diff so i can use the same rims. Also a fairlane na lsd fits in.
Well i dunno if anyone ere remembers but i came onto this forum searching if anyone had any rollas wif v6's in them. At the time there was no one on here that had done the conversion. I copped a whole lot of bagging and a whole lot of interest at the same time. But after months of weighing up options of putting an sr20det ive decided I'm gonna go the cheap and nasty option. Yep the V6. Oh and to make matters cheaper, i picked up this baby for only $150 haha. 92 vp.
