  1. Well, sad but true, the fastest car i have 'owned' is my poor old KE55 stock as a rock.

The fastest car i have 'had' ie work provided for me as part of pay (so essentially i paid for it) was a 1993 ED Ford Falcon on gas (ex cab). This thing was a freak of nature. Would spin the rears up to 60kmh in the dry and do 500klms on $30 back in the day.

  2. No, its the original dash cluster.

    I'm running 175/70/13s on stock KE55 wheels

I believe it's the original Borg Warner 4.11:1 diff.

I don't believe its the original gearbox. When I got the car the speedo used to read 20kmh over, and so the bloke i got it off (who is a mechanic) changed the speedo drive in the gearbox (apparently its the 'outer' one?) and that changed it to 10kmh over. Where can i get another speedo drive unit from, one that will read right? Also, if I had 80/85 profile tyres on it(ie stockers), would this fix the problem?

  3. Hey all

I have a 1980 KE55 5-speed stocker. My speedo is out. When i'm doing 60 it reads 70, when i'm doing 100 it says i'm doing 110. It seems to be perpetually 10kmh over.

Why is this? How do i fix this? Will I pass a roadworthy with this?

  4. In 2002 a mate of mine had his mum's maroon AE92 seca 5spd. We took it fanging and we got the tacho to hold on the pin at 8000rpm.

Damn it stunk. Then we took it up on two wheels going round a dippy corner.

Then after i owned the '55 for a little while, i went to a mates place on a farm and we did big donuts in a paddock. its hard to change direction in 2nd gear in a stock '55 and keep em spinning. But it is possible...

  5. yeah, who would own a pushrod motor hey.

Seeing as this site is basically built around the reliability of the 4k PUSHROD motor, it's probably best to respect the old design.

They are reliable! Yes, they are low power vs engine size, but they are also low fuel consumption for their size too.

I like my 4K cos it's reliable and powerful enough and cheap.

If i ever owned a V8 i would want it to be a pushrod. Low tech, big V8 rumble.

Just cos its your opinion that pushrod motors are no good doesn't make it so.

  6. cheers nick

whitepages tells me carb n ject is at underwood

there is a place called carb-tech at kippa ring, perhaps this is the one?

also, how hard is it to rebuild a carby on your own? ive never even taken one off let alone rebuilt one

  7. Hey All

My girlfriend has a 91 Suzuki Swift sedan. It is carby-fed and has flat spots in the carby. It likes to hesitate on takeoff.

I have spoken to a mechanic and he suggests that it needs a carby kit.

I have no knowledge or want to rebuild it, and i was wondering if any of you guys had any suggestions on what i should do? Perhaps a place to go who will sort out the carby? On the northside?

Obviously price is the bottom line, i'd like to keep it as cheap as possible.

    Cheers for your help fellas.

  8. man thats rooted

i've driven some cut n shut cabs in my time...

i was driving one that would squeak and sqwark every time the auto changed gear, and over potholes etc

and there was another one that you would have to steer with dear life to the right just to stop it wandering into the gutter.

and then i've driven one that was as good as new

  9. 91% scored higher (more stupid),

    2% scored the same, and

    7% scored lower (less stupid).

What does this mean? You are 7% stupid. This means...

You are our next Einstein. Wow! Keep up the great thinking.

Sweet. Years ago i got an OP13 but an A on the QCS test...

    OP = book learnt smarts

    QCS = common bloody sense

  10. Hey all,

I have a KE55 Sedan. I am selling it sometime between now and July (when i buy an ex-cab). I want your opinion on whether i should sell it as is, or do it up a bit and sell it registered.

    October 1980 KE55 Sedan

    341,200klms

    Factory 5-speed

    Reconditioned 4K

Very good mechanically: always starts first time.

I've done 21,000 in it and it's been a dream run.

    Interior is good, everything works.

    Kill switch

4 speaker stereo with commodore head unit and tempramental 6-stack in the boot.

    Problems:

Paintwork is mostly yellow, partly undercoat in repaired areas.

Speedo reads 10k over no matter what speed.

I'm not expecting much for it, but by the same token i'm not going to give her away.

I already have purchased some paint for her and a good mate is a spraypainter/panelbeater and he has offered to spray the car for cheap.

Should i get the car sprayed in a hope that it'll pass roadworthy?

Everything on the car works fine. No rust, no damage. Do you think i should persue the fix it up and roadworthy it path or should i just flog it off as is?

  11. Hey all

    just a little question

does anyone know of any other motors (other than a 4k) that are seemingly indistructible(for a motor)?

A 4.0l falcon motor is pretty darn good (block and head is good for 1,150,00klms)

The old 202 red and blue motors were pretty good too. they didn't die, they just got very, very tired.

    doesnt have to be toyota.

I can't think of any others, can you?
