taterphakes Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 Hi, I have a 88 4wd wagon, sometimes when i change to reverse it wont go in properly, just like it stays in neutral. when i change back up to 1st then reverse again it works. Also sometimes when slowing down in 2nd there is like a thump noise. Any ideas?? Thank you Quote
Des Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 Alot of gearboxes don't like going into reverse unless you've been to 1st first its a normal thing so not to worry. Where is the thump coming from the gear box or somewhere else ? Quote
taterphakes Posted December 9, 2006 Author Report Posted December 9, 2006 (edited) ahh duno where is coming from it doesnt happen that often like 2wice today tho. if by gearbox u mean i can feel it on the shifter, well i can't. o yeh i always go into 1st its just weird some times it don't work some times its like its in nuetral and some times its kinda half in. dads heard the noise 2 its kind of a shudder noise thinks maybye from the drive train but he dunno Edited December 9, 2006 by taterphakes Quote
Des Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 Does it shudder when you brake or just cruising along. Quote
taterphakes Posted December 9, 2006 Author Report Posted December 9, 2006 wel yeh I'm braking but only wen I'm neary stopped wen it happens. I'm not really breaking hard or anything more of slowing down with gears just breaking at the end to completly stop Quote
JiP Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 My parents always tought me to release the clutch, re-engage the clutch and try again when it wouldn't go into reverse. That always worked for me. Quote
Des Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 If its shuddering under braking I'm thinking your brake rotors(discs) might be warped. Quote

7shades Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 The shifting problem is common in the the 4wd.... the cable linkages need adjusting/replacing. (I've had to do this before) As for the thunk... its got me buggered but I'd probably assume an engine or gearbox mount, or at worst the the rwd drive chain in the trasfer case may be jumping a link... $$$ if thats the case.... taterphakes Posted December 9, 2006 Author Report Posted December 9, 2006 yeh i duno will see if it happens again tomoro. the car is practicaly brand nu tho 61 000 ks :P Quote
7shades Posted December 9, 2006 Report Posted December 9, 2006 rubber mounts can deteriorate with time as well as abuse, regardless of kilometres Also you seem to be missing a few letters on your keyboard. I suggest buying a new one before I ring your english teacher and tell him he's done a shithouse job and you need to repeat grade 3. Quote

Yeah i thought that aswell but my old folks had the same sort of problem and they had the rotors machined and it went away. Quote
