irokin Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 Anyone know any places that will do it for me?? and maybe roughly how much it will cost? I really only want another inch tops... Yes it is legal to widen rims. Its illegal to weld the spokes of the rim.
demuire Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 Jamie should know. He's looked into this before.
Super Jamie Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 it is illegal to "widen" the rim, it's not illegal to have the center cut out and welded into a whole new band. ADRs specify you may only have one circumferential weld on a wheel in qld, ray billeau engineering will do it for you, when i looked into it, it was about $120 a corner for 13x6" bands and welding balancing etc. he's in the white pages, bit of a grumpy old guy on the phone too
Felix Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 (edited) as i've said previously, ditch the 13x4.5 ke30 rims and get a set of 14x5.5 ra60/tarago steel rims. cost $10 each from the wreckers. they have more outward offset.. performance tyres start cheaper in 14" sizes, and there is more variety. Super Jamie Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 that's not a bad idea, they look pretty good on white ke20s too, give a bit of a retrotech look. 185/60s wouldnt be too shabby on them, and give you ke30 speedo ratio (mph x 1.5 = km/h like me)
irokin Posted August 5, 2004 Author Report Posted August 5, 2004 as i've said previously, ditch the 13x4.5 ke30 rims and get a set of 14x5.5 ra60/tarago steel rims. cost $10 each from the wreckers. they have more outward offset.. they went a looonng time ago no way in hell id bother widening them now looks like so yea theyre the ones I wanna get widened...hrmm dunno...theyre already 5.5" wide...going half an inch more doesnt seem worth it.... more outward offset is my problem too. Remember I'm running a KE30 U series diff thats wider  so my rims scrub on the guards quite badly :S
Felix Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 (edited) ok, get it now. looks a lot better than the old '30 rims. don't think you will have much luck widening one piece mags. you will have to find a wider set and sell the one's you've got. you need to roll your guards. easiest way is to get some really thick walled galv pipe, wedge it between the guard and tyre and drive the car back and forth slowly with a couple of mates sitting on the boot. irokin Posted August 5, 2004 Author Report Posted August 5, 2004 my other option is to strech 165s over the rims. Give me that leet drifto look
irokin Posted August 5, 2004 Author Report Posted August 5, 2004 Rear Wheels: I sent my rear two Enkie 15x7" wheels to Eric Vaughn Machine which specializes in widening alloy wheels. They basically cut off the inside rim and welded on a section of a wider rim, keeping the same outside wheel and center design. I had these widened to 9". It cost $165 each to widen the wheels. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a new set of 16 or 17" wheels, plus I wanted some wheels that are unique that not many people have. I then mounted a pair of Yokohama AVS Intermediate 255/45-15 tires. These fit perfectly inside the fenders and have about half inch clearance to the leaf springs. Click here for photo. Felix Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 (edited) nah, don't do that (fitting 165's), not the way to make your car handle. clearance your guards and put some real good tyres on it. i found i have way way less scrubbing since i made the change from 175/70x13's to 185/60x13's. i was always scrubbing out over big bumps and when cornering hardish and hitting a bump mid corner with my kids in the back seat. since the tyre change i have only scuffed a couple of times, even with way higher cornering loads. total opposite to what i originally expected. irokin Posted August 5, 2004 Author Report Posted August 5, 2004 Well with the alloys on I can't have anyone in the back...constant scrubbing, which is why the steelies are back on. I'm thinking of getting air shocks to stiffen up the rear and compensate for shitty springs.
demuire Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 air shocks? As in like airbag shocks??? Why don't you just get better springs? Aren't your shocks new?
Super Jamie Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 so you're going to spend AU$235 getting old hotwires widened so they are illegal in australia like tom's would be? just buy new performance superlites, it would be cheaper. doug's right, widening a one piece mag wheel isn't as simple as widening steelies. time for new mags. ausrotary.com if you have 4x110 stud pattern, otherwise toymods and the datsun forums for sale section 165s on 5.5" rims would just look normal, and give you big flimsy sidewall like me  185/60s all the way
Felix Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 limiting your rear suspension travel with pump up shocks is a very poor bandaid. roll your guards, and put a decent set of heavy duty shocks in the back. urethane shackle bushes help a lot i found (only about $35) with scrubbing during cornering. not overly keen on running stiffer springs on the back as you get a jarring ride, and also it makes it even harder to put power down on bumpy corners. not to mention the car won't squat as much on hard takeoffs so will be slower in street drags. i have a good bit of pipe here if you wanted to try rolling your guards out.
irokin Posted August 5, 2004 Author Report Posted August 5, 2004 ffs...people how many track days have you seen me at?? I like air shocks...if you think about them its a very very good bandaid. Both air shocks are linked by an air line. when the car rolls it acts like a sway bar. They also act like normal shocks when you drop them down to about 20psi. When you wind them up (up to 120psi) its drifto time . My old shocks are shit...theyre original items..... Id rather not roll my guards. Ive lipped the inside. I you have a look at the picture ^^ up there. You'll notice the guards have a little line around the top. If you roll them it will look pretty f@$ked up
