Never said i know best

I think you need to assess the situation a little better. My car is not a race car. Ive only ever raced it once. I drive on the road and you wont find me trying to take 60kmph posted corners at 100kmph+.

Perhaps you should do a little bit of research before going "nah theyre shit". Ive experienced airshocks before. They work quite well.

If you read this page http://www.kanter.com/p52-shox.html#air

you will find:

Corrects riding height, compensates for sagging rear springs or heavy loads

sounds somewhat like my situation??

I appreciate your help where given. I don't appreciate your arrogance

arrogance? Since when was Felix arrogant? He's been trying to be helpful, and nothing more.

Just because your car isn't a race car, or you don't race, doesn't mean that you can't make your car handle. Pinky wasn't a race car (although I did race it), but I still attempted to make it handle, albeit on a tight budget.

The way you talk about most things gives the impression you like to drive hard, or at least have fun in your car. That generally implies you'd like your car to handle. But hey, implications aren't always right.

Obviously both Felix and I don't think air shocks are the best thing for handling, but if you've heard otherwise and you think they suit your application, then go for it.

This is f@$king ridiculous.

Just because I'm young doesnt mean I havent experienced things. Leaf springs suck? so what I should upgrade to 4 links now? not gonna happen. Sure its a bandaid whats your point? If I wanna do it then what does it hurt you? Just because I didnt take your advice your gonna get cut up about it?

I also very confused. You say air shocks suck...but so do hard springs? so what the hell am i supposed to do? Go through a set of tyres every month because the side wall scrubs away?? I don't wanna roll the guards because it will look like crap unless I'm taking your rolling method the wrong way...then you could simpily correct my misunderstanding.

I deleted this thread...the undeleted it and I probably should lock and delete it or some shit but then youd have a bitch about me abusing my moderator rights or some crap.

Let's repeat myself here:

I don't have a great impression of air shocks as far as making a car handle. I could be wrong, who knows maybe air shocks have improved a fair bit since the last time I looked at them (craig had a very funky lolux). Air shocks are not cheap, or at least not the last time I looked. And besides, if air shocks were good for handling, then surely many racecars would have it, or something similar.

Anyways, onwards to springs. What Felix said about hard springs is correct, or at least is to my understanding.

So, what should you do? Really, whatever you want to do.

What do I think would be best? I think it would be very helpful if you replaced your shocks. Like you said, they're the original items and they are shagged. Shagged shocks does absolutely NOTHING for handling (or keeping you from bottoming out). Get some heavy duty gas shocks, maybe some KYB's, and it'll help stop your car bottoming out etc. It will also help you keep traction in the rear end, and also help you put power to the ground.

Like I suggested in my ICQ conversation with you, bring your car to a suspension specialist, maybe somewhere like Fulcrum or Pedders. Get them to do one of those el-cheapo suspension checks, it will tell you most everything that needs looking at on your car. Like you mentioned in the conversation, most of your bushes are probably shagged (however you also did mention you had new shocks...). If your suspension bits are stuffed, your car won't handle, and will do all sorts of weird things you probably don't want it to do. Like bottom out and kill your tyres etc.

But at the end of the day, it all boils down to what YOU want to do. It's your car, it's your money. If you want to take our advice, then we're glad to be of some help. If you don't want to, then that's fine by us too. Don't think we're going to lose a moments sleep because you have other opinions, because we don't. Really.

i don't know what's better, but wouldnt a set of rear air shocks be more expensive than a half decent set of new rear normal gas shocks or oil shocks?

if anything, the rear of these cars needs to be softer, not harder. i have pedders "comfort" gas in the back of mine with stock springs, and it's quite a jarring ride. people aren't real fans of my back seat

if your car isn't a racecar, then it doesn't need coilovers or custom rims. if you want to do stupid shit on the street, then i reckon the best way to do it is on a budget with bolt-in things. forget all this customizing and different parts and turbo motors and adjustable crap crap crap, just get your stuff running nicely and balanced and it will be good enough

hell, i'm kinda getting into making my car decent around a hillclimb track. my "big dream" at the moment is ke70 brakes, a set of rob's old rally springs, some monroe gas shocks i picked up cheap, and some new polyurethane bushes and good steering setup. simple, not cheap and i'm not even customizing anything, and damn effective

i guess what everyone's saying ben is crawl before you can walk. you've got a ke20 with 30-odd yearold suspension, and you say it "needs" all this insane stuff to handle the way you want. bullshit. a decent set of original-type dampers, new bushes, and replacement or perhaps custom front springs will be MORE than enough to make your ke20 a joy to drive, compared to what it is now anyway

besides, doing stupid shit on the street is pretty much limited to burnouts and slipping the arse out around corners. maybe you SHOULD get into some amateur racing, get some direction of what to do with your mods, rather than just reading far-fetched things on the internet and deciding to do that

please for the love of god do not roll your guards with a steel pipe

in fact please don't do it at all, it makes your real wheel arches look like they are made of paper when there is no lip there and if you get water under the fold (you will) the thing will rust to pieces

PLEASE NO!

nothing wrong with those 'pump up' shockers except they tend to leak and you need to repressurise them regularly
