Peter Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Gawd I'm getting toooo used to removing corolla engines. extracted the tooth on the 20 yesterday and it took me all of 1 hour.( now what am I going to do for the rest of the day) Ahh, you think I had outside assistance from no. 1 son, no. 1 who? Whats your best time? Hot 186 from a HK in 20 minutes, and I mean Hot !!! Coppers chasing us through Carina, pulled into home and four of us got stuck into it and just finished as the coppers pulled into the yard (yeah they knew us). "Nah mate, couldn't have been me, the motor's not even in the car." I said, while suffering 3rd degree burns to the hands. Quote
andrew Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 are you talking how quickto remove engines??? Quote
Peter Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 Yeah, why not. With or without mechanical assistance or lubrication. Quote
andrew Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 ok... engine and box out of rt118 corona : 16mins engine and box out of ke55 corolla : 12mins no assistance from rattleguns etc........just me and my mate jake Quote
Peter Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 Shit, thats pretty good Andrew I'll remember you when I have to do it again. I ( or should I say my back) remember doing it that way Nick (350 chevs) and then I got an engine lifter. Quote
Felix Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 have pulled a motor and box out separately from a ke20 in under 10 mins. was 4 of us, we rolled it on it's side, dropped tailshaft undid gbox bolts. the box was stubborn to separate, so i shook the shit out of it and it came away in my hands, and at the same time the engine mounts broke and the engine fell out onto the ground. was so funny, hahaha. Peter Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 Good one Doug, How about the more conventional method? Shit, Ryan and I dropped one out under and then lifted the front of the 10 up and walked it back off the engine/box. Quote
demuire Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 (edited) I must just suck - my best effort is 2 hours to remove the gearbox alone. Worst effort about 3.5 hours to remove the same gearbox. Haven't pulled an engine out yet, but it took me quite awhile to get the 4AGE into the KE35... Edited August 16, 2004 by demuire Quote
andrew Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 Shit, thats pretty good Andrew I'll remember you when I have to do it again. yeah i have had a lot of practice with paddock bashers Quote
Peter Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 But from what I understand yours is not a standard ( easy ) job. Repetition kicks in for me. Jack the back of the car up really high, to get at rear uni and gearbox all in one hit, and mainly cause I can't get a jack under the front. Underneaths all done, pop out gear lever and start under bonnet. biggest pain is removing SU's to get to heat shield to get to manifolds. Oh, I didn't mention the time spent jawing and the lubrication.(deduct from 1 hour) Quote
Felix Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 can't understand anyone wanting to stuff a 4ag into a ke1x series. would be a major pain in the ass to work on. go well though. Quote
Redwarf Posted August 16, 2004 Report Posted August 16, 2004 (edited) Tony Scott and co changed a clutch on his KE70 Rally car in 19 minutes from the moment the car stopped to the moment it left, in a paddock, to a hot car straight out of the stage. Dave Gaines did a diff by himself on the Fat Lady 240K in 21 minutes in the same conditions. I usually do a motor in an hour or so. No need to hurry these things. :D Should we perhaps clarify it to, how long does it take to remove an engine from a car that you want to put an engine back into? If not, side cutters rock when it comes to disconnecting wiring, fuel lines, radiator hoses, clutch cables....... Edited August 16, 2004 by Redwarf Quote
Peter Posted August 16, 2004 Author Report Posted August 16, 2004 mmmmm, wonder how long it takes the guys who remove the import motors from jap cars. The wiring is usually cut through and the mounts hot axed off. Quote
Felix Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 really what is the point of rushing these things when you miss things and have to do it all over again? not so bad if you are just pulling an engine from a wreck. or maybe if you have to in a rally situation with time limits. i've rushed a clutch change in the past and found weird noises when i went to operate the car. turned out i put the clutch plate in back to front and it was rubbing on the flywheel bolts. wasn't to happy with myself having to do it again. learnt a valuable lesson. these days, i'd rather take my time doing an engine change. at least i know then the car will start first go, because i haven't missed something stupid. a ke1x with extractors slows things down, due to space constraints, compared to later cars. you don't pull the motor and box separately, takes waaaayyyy longer. Quote
Peter Posted August 18, 2004 Author Report Posted August 18, 2004 It may take a little longer to remove but i would rather line up the spigot on the deck than crawling around under a car ( Either cold concrete or the attack of the killer bullants, aaarrrgghh) Quote
