hey guys,

just wondering.....with my car the way it is atm, Discs on the front and Drums on the back.

what would it take and what would i need to convert to a disc brake rear end.....would it take much and would it be easy.....i'm sick of my handbrake being so shitty. going to have a look at that this weekend....

i can get my hands on a pair of ae82 discs, unused.

any help would be great.

To get discs on the back of your car there are basically 2 steps:

- get disc to fit on the axle. You'll want a disc that originally slides over the original studs of your axle, the same way a drum slides over the studs. Examples of this are the Bluebird TRX setup (although this does have an internal drum handbrake too), and I think the R31 Skylines are the same. Not sure about other RWD disc brake cars, but quite possibly the same.

- get calipers to fit on the diff housing, and clamp over the disc. For this you'll need to fabricate some caliper mounts. You can get get a plate machined up that will bolt to your diff housing where the drum brakes usually do.

All in all, it isn't too complex, but not the easiest thing to do either. One problem you will probably find with upgrading your rear brakes is brake bias. A bias valve will fix this.

Just don't forget your handbrake. Ive sat there and figured out a whole setup that would fit...then realised I forgot my handbrake....

AE82s are 4x100 if I'm not mistaken (I'm damn sure they are). So if the hat does fit over you'll have to get them redrilled.

Yes AE82 is 4x100, same as the other FWD Corollas.

You'll need to use calipers etc off the back of another car (not front) so that you can still use the handbrake setup. You'll most definately need to do some custom work with the handbrake cables, but I can't imagine that being too difficult.

I believe we're going to attempt Pintara rotors on the back of Blue. I'll let you know how we go....

I know, I'd like to see that when it's done, I'm sure the job will be up to top Fook spec, like the rest of that lovely little beast......

It's actually done (I didn't do the conversion), just in pieces at the moment. Still waiting for the diff housing to come back, and I still need to find a centre and gears for it. Once that's done then the diff will pretty much be complete, and then I'll just need to sort out brake lines (should be simple apart from the hydraulic handbrake bit), and handbrake cables. At a later date might also look into getting a panhard rod, but CBF at the moment...
