Hi All.

 

I'm commencing in the restoration of my 1973 Corolla Ke20. Its a little old, needs a little work, but mechnically its in preety darn good nic! I do however have a problem with my brakes. Now, its more of a delimma than anything... I was thinking of switching the 4 drum brakes for disc brakes, but I am told this will take a bit of modification. What I would like to know is, whats the best thing "brake wise" for me to do. Do I stay with the original braking system or do any of the members here have information on other alternatives.

 

I'm in South Australia so any information on brake retailers that may be able to help me would be great.

ke55 discs bolt straight on if you have discs already so not sure about converting drums.

G'day mate , i'm not too sure about the drums but thinking about it if you where to replace your drum braked struts with the disc braked conterpart ? sound logical but i haven't seen a drum braked front end on a KE2# before , if your interested i have a set of KE2# struts with discs and calipers and the also have height adjustble coilovers on them too , that i'm not going to be using , i think i'll put a for sale thread up tomorow , let me know if your interested in them

I thought ke20's were disc brake ?

 

But if you want disc brakes you need Ke20 disc brake hubs, rotors, backing plates, Calipers, brake lines.

Indeed! I have been informed that the Ke55 braking system slots right into place on my Ke20... is this a certainty? I am interested

yes-ish. The backing plate holes on your strut need to be oversized and re-threaded. But apart from that, it's bolt on.

I'm about to do a ke55 brake upgrade for a ke20 and was wondering if the brake booster off the ke55 would also fit straight into the ke20, or what a good brake booster upgrade would be... cheers

Dude, don't bother with the booster. The car weighs next to nothing and doesn't require one. Just change the rotors and calipers, and you'll notice a marked improvement.

well my b/master is stuffed and have a ke55 brake booster lying around, so thought it might help... so you still think jst put a ke20 one back on

Maybe not the original 20 item. I've run a Swift twin circuit one for years (although I wouldn't recommend that one, they're ferociously expensive), and I know others have changed to twin circuit ones as well. I know Lada niva fit with minmum mods, as do others.....
