J-PORT KE11 Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 1st off this isnt an easy job, requires a fair bit of cutting and fabricating, if u are thinking of doing this too a neat ke1X forget about it, use another engine. 2nd this is based on a 12a engine as its smaller than a 13b. i have seen 2 different ways of doing thins convo due to the position of the eccentric shaft in the engine (in the middle of the motor, as opposed to a crankshaft sitting at the bottom of the motor) you really want to position the motor/gearbox as flat as possible. too much angle and u get vibrations and snap front uni joints quite quickly. taking this into account the 2 methods i have seen are:- 1.) position the motor as far forwards as you can go. this will require the radiator being moved forwards, behind the grille (under the radiator support), remove the fan off the motor and have the water pump pulley a couple of inches behind the radiator (allowing enough room for a thermo fan). this is done so that the vast majority of the gearbox bell housing can sit in the engine bay (so you don have too chop the hell outta the firewall, more about that in method 2). the firewall and trans tunnel will need to be cut for clearence, but this is mainly just opening the top of the tunnel to accomodate the larger gearbox. this method is great for n/a engines as it doesent leave much room for a turbo. 2) this method requires an excessive amount of cutting of the firewall and trans tunnel and will require a custom made tunnel to be made, but the benefits are that a. better weight distribution as the motor sits further back b. leaves room out the front for an intercooler c. gives enuff room for a turbo basically this involves cuttin the firewall up high and then removing the tunnel all the way to the support that runs thru the middle of the car. the motor/gearbox is positioned so that the rear of the engine will be sitting even with the firewall, this allows you to use an 1st gen rx7 sump. so thats basically the 2 options to consider, with option 1 u may even get a 13b into it, it all comes down to how much fabricating you want to do. next is the mounting side of things. a front crossmember will need to be made that can mount inbetween the chassis rails for the front engine mount, and also a gear box crossmember will need to be fabricated. a tail shaft needs to be made. the clutch needs to be converted to a hydralic setup, and unfortunatly theres no easy way to do this, so experiment. the brakes also need to be upgraded, cause they flat out just wont stop the car. you wont fit a booster in the engine bay either so it will have to be remote mounted. the master cylinder also sits in the way and has to be moved. i think thats the general jist of it......... its not a job for an amature, but can be done for enuff $$$$$ my brother and i built this car, took a lot of time, experimenting and $$$$, but it got there in the end, but in retro spec it would have been easier with a piston motor. pics can be found here http://www.cardomain.com/ride/473817/1 some vids are here (with a 12aep) http://www.putfile.com/run011 hope that helps Quote
tenyearguarantee Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 nice to see a post like this. a couple extra bits of info, for front brakes i found this while i was roaming the net. It talks about upgrading disk brakes, some guy made it, it has his name in it. Its a really good and complete guide, havent implemented it yet but may do. ke10_fbu.zip Quote
tenyearguarantee Posted July 30, 2007 Report Posted July 30, 2007 also the gearbox length is a bit of a pain . I ended up using a shortened mx-5 remote shifter just to get it a little bit closer to the driver. Quote

13BT_KE20 Posted August 1, 2007 Report Posted August 1, 2007 I'm running a S5 turbo g/box in my KE20, shifter sits just in front of the handbrake Quote
