Oil Coming Out Of Carby

If your going to go to the trouble of re-ringing the engine, you may as well get the crank machined and new bearings fitted.

expensive???

"If the PCV valve is gummed up the car won't idle as good as it should, as the PCV system acts as a controlled air leak."

i started it up 2day and it wouldnt idle properly, it would jus start to chug then stall. i will definately give this a go

While your at it buy a can of nulon throttle body and carby cleaner.

expensive???

Not at all. Most people are scared off by that thought. You can do it for as little as a few hundred dollars. Some people like to do things properly the first time. If the mechanic said it needed a rebuild, then take his advice. If it was just a faulty PCV valve, he would have said so. He's retired, so its not like he will be holding out his hand hoping you appraoch him to rebuild the engine.

Alternatively you could buy a 2nd hand engine.... and just keep driving the car.

Part of owning a corolla is the fun of rebuilding your first engine. What better time than now? At least you will have a fresh reliable engine at the end of it.

yeah well i like that thought, jus startin 2 make up my own workshop and will give it a rebuild, well there is a small rattle in the pcv valve but would crc do to clean it out a bit??

If when you start the car and it idles rough then stalls, check the fuel cut off solenoid on the carby, mine was loose the other day and I almost pulled my hair out trying to work out what it was

yeah righto, will have a look at that, i kno that when i rebuilt the carby there was no O ring on the end of it and I'm pretty sure i put another one on haha. will double check

PCV

Run a small air filter rather then the tube, or as suggested a catch can.

i always thought that an oil breather went on that pipe infront of where the pcv valve is as that connects to the air filter. but after reading what sammo said it sounds as if they go on the pcv valve pipe, I'm confused.... :hmm:

goin back a while ago.... lol. have only just decided to fix this oil problem and was wondering if people could post up some pics of their catch cans.

jus so i get an idea of whether i should by a nice good lookin one, or jus make one myself :lolcry: .

oh and also jus to see how u properly hook them up haha

(have seen some on eBay with more then 1 outlet, so jus wondering where else it connects to lol)

if theres oil around the base of the air filter it will be the vent on the rocker cover thats infront of the PCV valve. had the same problem with my ute the base of the oilfilter was dripping with oil.

problem with the PCV valve is that its closed under low vacum meaning when the engine is being revved, producing more blowby the PCV shuts. with nowhere to got the gasses escape via the hose from rocker cover to airfilter housing. the positioning of the hose is also part of the problem, being placed directly over the rockers which are thrashin away sprayin oil everywhere the gasses coming up through the head from the crankcase pick up the oil spray and carry it to where it can go no further which is the air filter.

what id do is put a mini airfilter on the rocker cover or plumb a hose from the rocker cover to a catch can then another hose form the catch can back to the base of the air filter.or plumb the PCV valve into the catch can aswel as the first vent and plumb it all back to where the PCV plumbs in below the carb.

the way i see it is that any positive pressure in the crank case is bad (some racers use vacum pumes for negative pressure to make more power) so vent as much as you can and should keep goin forever.

hey mate thanks. but i was jus thinkin of running a tube from the PCV to the inlet manifold, that way i can't get done for anythin stupid bout dangerous gases etc, then i was jus gonna chuck a oil breather on that bit where the tube comes from the air filter assembly... easy and cheap i think
