May 31, 200818 yr comment_249983 My K-50 had been making a whining bearing noise in 1st,2nd,3rd and 5th gear so my mechanic said come in and i will teach you to pull it apart. We thought it was just a dead bearing but when we pulled the countershaft, which is the shaft that runs parallel to the output shaft in the gearbox and where the bearing operates for the gears on the shaft and it has deteriorated creating the whining noise. Has anyone else come across this? Is it common problem? Here are some images of the shaft out of the gearbox and an image from my Toyota chassis manual, only in the manual it doesn’t have the section of bearing steel in which the bearing runs on in my gearbox. Any advice or anyone with a spare would be greatly appreciated. :) Report
May 31, 200818 yr comment_250006 The wear of hard casing is a common problem for counter-shafts that have been overloaded or with poor oil overloading can also be running in 5th at low speeds. Report
May 31, 200818 yr comment_250066 Yes very comon problem. very cheap new as well. i paid $38 for last one brought Report
June 1, 200818 yr comment_250079 That one is nothing compared to one I had wear out. The cluster gear ate into one end nearly a third of the way through the shaft. Took nearly 2 tonne of pressure to push the bugger out in a press casue it was catching on the worn bit. :bash: I'll see if I can't find it and take a pic. Report

If so how long ago and would you have the part No? :bash: ive done a few off these g/boxs, igot the part from toyota & a place called BSC motion technology. toyota no: 33411-12020. this is only for the k50 with the ribbed casing not the smooth casing. June 1, 200818 yr Author comment_250136 My gearbox is the KE55 K-50 "smooth" gearbox so it's different part is it? Have you had any experience with these gearboxes? Report
June 1, 200818 yr comment_250140 well that changes everything. was the car factory fitted with that g/box. iam thinking you will have to go toyota for this. ive got 2 part no:s 33411-10010 (up to 8/77) & 33411-10011 (8/77 to 8/80) this is the best i can do! best thing you can do is get a ke70 5speed with the rib casing & change the tail housing, there really easy to find parts for & you can do a set of bearings, counter shaft & gaskets for less than $200. good luck :bash: Report

Thanks for all your advice trd it has been fantastic  I have just looked through a Haynes KE70 repair manual i had and it has an image of the countershaft and it looks very similar could the two be that same part? What are the differences between the KE55 and KE70 5 speed gearboxes? Edited June 1, 200818 yr by lappy Report
June 2, 200818 yr comment_250453 the differences are in that counter shaft, KE70 one is bigger (cluster is different) & the front bearing on the input shaft was larger as well. Report
