gt88 Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 I just bought a 1997 Corolla Conquest sedan and have a few questions. 1. The transmission light (ie. P, R, N, D, 2, L) does not light up when I turn the headlights on. How do I change this globe? 2. Is there a light in the boot? 3. In the glove box there is a black box in the top right corner. Anyone have a clue what it is? Here are some pics 4. Is this the correct owners manual? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TOYOTA-1994-COROLLA...3QQcategoryZ102 572QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem 5. A few lines on the rear demister don't work. Any fixes? 6. A small bit of the roof lining is sagging down. Can I fix it myself or should I take it to professional? 7. On most of the doors the seals are poor, so you have to put some force (not a lot, but some) when closing the door. Is there a special silicone or something I can put on the seals to make them close easier? 8. The amber tail lights are water logged. I'm going to take them off tomorrow and dry them, but what can I do to prevent them getting water logged in the future? Also the amber taillights are fadding. Is there something I can do to get them amber again? Sorry about the large amount of questions but I just was to get the Corlloa in the best shape I can get it in. Thanks heaps!! Quote

Is there something I can do to get them amber again? Sorry about the large amount of questions but I just was to get the Corlloa in the best shape I can get it in. Thanks heaps!! 1) Try taking the centre console out - the back section comes out easily (two bolts in the bottom of the console bin, under the carpet, and two screws on the sides near the gear lever), front section requires you to dismantle most of the lower dash. Should be a little globe in there somewhere (mine's manual, so can't help there) 2) Yes there is, on the "roof" of the boot, just to the right? (might be left) of centre but still between the speakers. 3) That is the remote control port for the security system/central locking etc. You push the remote in there and then do other things to change settings on one/two-stage door unlocks, horn chirp on lock/unlock etc etc. Also where you put a blank remote in order to key it into your immobiliser (must be pre-programmed by Toyota though). 4) Yes it is, essentially (1994 was the first year of the AE10x in Australia, was a mid-life upgrade but thats mostly trim and a bit of electronics). Much much more useful is the Gregorys workshop manual, number 271 I think it is, around $40-50 from your local Supercheap/Repco etc 5) Does the demister as a whole still work? You can get a special tape/paste thing from parts stores to fix the lines (kinda like liquid paper). If it still works, I personally wouldn't bother with it 6) Depends on how much a professional auto trimmer would charge 7) Maybe the seals just need to be changed, are they coming loose/tearing? The doors do normally need a firm shove to close, best thing is just to push the door firmly all the way home, don't stop until it's shut fully otherwise it'll only partly latch and not lock 8) Is it just fog/condensation or actual water? If it's condensation then the vent tubes are blocked/clogged/not working properly. If it's actual water then the seals on the light are failing, should be able to fix it with some silicone or the like. As for them fading, try polishing the lights with some toothpaste, that tends to do a good job on most tailights Any more questions don't hesitate to ask, I've built up quite a knowledge bank from working on my AE102, got the Gregorys manual too if you want anything out of it (can scan and post pictures), but I highly recommend getting one for yourself, they're quite comprehensive and essential if you're going to delve into any electrical or mechanical issues. 7shades Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 (1) yes there's a little 5 watt globe in there, easy to change... I should know, its been blown on every auto corolla I've owned :eatlead: (5) That conductive paint stuff costs a (comparitive) fortune... (6) Between $120-$180, don't try it yourself you will never get it right.... the low density foam behind the fabric will have perished as well, and makes sticking it back to the lining VERY difficult. (7) Try running a stick of 'dry lube' around the rubber seals, sometimes with age they can shrink ever so slightly and bunch up in the tighter sections, making the door hard to close. Bit of lube will allow them to slip into proper position. But yes they are a particularly tight seal (insert horny eskimo joke here) at the best of times... don't be afraid of giving the door a good slam. Its a corolla, its designed to handle repeated abuse. (8) They're rooted, and will never be good again. You can get the amber re-coloured, but they look like arse and you've still got your leakage problem, which will be the actual rubberised seal where the lens meets the housing. Get better complete new lights from the wreckers... looking at about $30 a side. Do you have the grey plastic centre section on the boot between the tail lights or the red and amber one? If its the latter, I'm willing to bet its faded too :bash: Quote

If its the latter, I'm willing to bet its faded too :eatlead: Since it's a '97 model, that makes it the facelift version and will have the coloured garnish. However, I've found the sedan ones to fade a LOT less than the Seca variants. And mine has not faded one bit, neither have the tail-lights either (also a '97 Conquest sedan) Quote
gt88 Posted August 6, 2008 Author Report Posted August 6, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the reply guys. Appreciate it. Hiro does the Gregory workshop manual show how to dismantle dash or explain about the remote control port or does it just explain the mechanical/electrical side of the car? Also I only got one set of key and remote with the car. I'm going to get a key cut and want to get a spare remote. This is the current remote I have which has a grey plastic piece in the each corner at the top. Is this the stock one? Do I buy them from Toyota and how much approx will it set me back? And do I program it at Toyota like you said above Hiro? Edited August 6, 2008 by gt88 Quote

Yes, the Gregorys tells you how to pull the dash out, don't think it mentions stuff on the remote though (that'd be in the Toyota owners manual, mine's running around somewhere, can post up the relevant stuff if you want) And yes, thats the stock remote control unit. You should be able to buy them from Toyota, no idea on cost (non-genuine ones pop up on eBay fairly frequently, no idea if they work or not either). If you buy one from Toyota it should be pre-programmed, you'll just need to insert it into the port and do some magic to get it to key into your immobiliser. Once again, pretty sure it's covered in the owners manual, so I'll check tonight Quote
gt88 Posted August 7, 2008 Author Report Posted August 7, 2008 Thanks for your help Hiro. You're a f**king champion! I'm going to bid for the owners manual on ebay and buy the workshop manual over the weekend. Cheers again. Quote
gt88 Posted August 8, 2008 Author Report Posted August 8, 2008 Ive got a few more questions. 1. How do you remove the tail lights? Ive removed the nuts on the inside and removed the two screws. The housing is a bit loose but it seems to be stuck somewhere. I don't want to put too much force fearing ill break it. 2. The boot globe was busted but I also noticed that the grey plastic bit which you plug the globe in is broken. I'm going to go to the wreckers hopefully over the weekend. Does the boot light have a cover over the globe? Because all mine had was a small grey plastic bit which was connected to the wiring. Quote

Just undo all the 4 nuts or so and wiggle the tail-light to try and get it loose. If necessary, get a screwdriver and wrap it in cloth to use as a lever, shouldn't take too much force. Remember to disconnect the wiring too so you don't accidentally rip that free. As for the Gregorys, they also pop up on eBay from time to time, $65 is a bit of a rip (I got mine for $50 from Peps, and that included them shipping it in as they didn't have it in stock), you could wait until Supercheap or wherever have a sale on too. gt88 Posted August 8, 2008 Author Report Posted August 8, 2008 I rang Autobarn and they can order one in for me for $45. What about the boot light Hiro? Does the light have a cover over it? I just want to make sure I get all the necessary parts when I go to the wreckers. Quote

gt88 Posted August 13, 2008 Author Report Posted August 13, 2008 Few more questions. How on earth do you open the remote? I'm trying to change the battery, but the thing just wont open. Also when pushing the water button for the windscreen are the wipers suppose to turn a few times? Because mine don't. When I push the button the water squirts and thats all. Quote

You don't open the remote. Generally the battery lasts the life of the remote (or the remote lasts the life of the battery ;)), you take it back to Toyota and get either them to put a new battery in, or get a new remote. I think it's only the newer Corollas (ie ZZE122s onwards) that have easily replaceable batteries. And no, the wipers don't turn when you use the washers. They did on the Camry that I learnt to drive in, but not the 102. Quote
