Tume Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Hey, today I've seen that more then I expected have been in the Australian Defence Force Cadets and would like to see some people share their experiences. If you would be able to mention What Service What Era or timeframe What rank or position you gained And just your experiences as a whole that would be awesome. Just to start off I am in the Australian Air Force Cadets as a Cadet Under Officer. Joined in 2004. Quote
irokin Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 AirTC (now ugh AAFC), 2000-2002, LCDT but I'd done Corporals course but left shortly after to finish grade 12. Top fun. I was top prof cadet and banner bearer which meant lots of parade drill and lots of early morning marching. Was great fun because I was good mates with all the guys in the banner party. Being escorted by a group of mates with steyrs or drill swords down the main street of town was pretty cool. Standing still at parades and ceremonys was a good challenge. We once had a CUO tell us we were weak etc and we stood at right dress for over an hour until he got the shits that he couldn't break us heh heh. By the time my second year rolled round most of my mates were SGT to CUO so I always ended up getting delegations. Bivouacs were fantastic as were things like survival camp. Sounds like fear of litigation is really hurting cadets. It was just starting to come in when I got out but hadn't become bad yet. We were still doing crazy stuff out in the bush when I left. Like on state of origin night, one camp had a radio but the main camp about 700 meters away didn't. So the guys were letting off cans of whatever food they could find in the fire to let us know when a try was scored. From memory little cans of asparagus were the loudest and flew for miles :jamie:! Budowski Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 army cadets adelaide - Noarlunga "40" then warradale forget the unit no rank- lance corpral age- 15 at that time time frame roughly 1992-93 my experience- was a great way to get kids to join the defence force, we got to learn about diversion tactics and camoflarge Had the opertunity to ride in black hawks when they came to adelaide and go on several shoots, so many differnet things i got to drive a UNIMOG around the car park and ride in armourd personel carriers from time to time learning how to battle deploy from the back of a vehicle. Got to mark in several anzac parades so many different things would take time to remember. I'm guessing cadets don't get to do much of these things anymore. Quote
WinKE55 Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 What Service Australian Air Force Cadets Squadron 226 I think. What Era or timeframe 2004-2005 era What rank or position you gained Gained no rank, was there only for a few months. So only Cadet. Experiences I learnt more about the Air Force, just the environment I was in felt better and felt I was doing something for the better not for the worst. Gained knowledge in marching and what it's like if I ever want to be in the Defence Force. I also gained a trip to ADFA and that was probably the most memorable time I have had during my Air Force Cadet time. Seeing the Army showing off there ambush techniques infront of a wide audience shooting blanks at each other, seeing all the big ass helicopters the Navy and Air Force use, Actually going inside of them and learning bits and pieces about the incredible machines. Even jumping in an APC and picking up several types of weapons and see how they work. Such things as grenade launchers, RPG launchers, different types of Styres and many different kind of cool stuff. Though I grew tired of it as I wish I was on or at like an Army camp base setup, always giving us fun/exciting things to do like pushing us to go through obstacle courses etc. We were in Beenleigh High School after hours etc.. Its not all its cracked up to be if you're on an active base. 208Sqn was our arch rivals (we were 225Sqn just up the road) and they're based on Amberley. The hassle you have to go through to get on the base each time (usually because someone decided to forget their blue book) and then once you're on base you're restricted to a small area and usually have ADGs carrying on in the accom around the place. Much more freedom off base :jamie:. Quote
Tume Posted August 24, 2008 Author Report Posted August 24, 2008 I am lucky in that my SQN (608) is on its very own base from WW2. In WW2 there used to be a Runway, bunkers and Hospital, Messes and Accomodations..The whole lot. Nowadays the bunkers are sealed up or used for mushroom farms, the Runway is now the Gawler Airfield and has been partially removed for the stupid highway, the Accomodation and Messes and now a footy club and dog training area, and the hospital is our main Building. Every time we go to Edinburgh it isn't really any trouble getting in or moving around. SECPOL don't get annoyed at us unless someone locks themself out of somewhere. Mind you for promotion courses we used to have the MSI's Quarters right across the road so everyone was mindful not to be ignorant of them. Quote
RollaNut Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 What Service: Melbourne High School Cadet Unit (MHSCU) What Era or timeframe: 2003 and 2004, while i was in year 9 and 10 What rank or position you gained: stayed as cadet. although i did a junior leaders courser at pucka, and a signals courser at broadmeadows Experiences: Probably the most fun was survival camp which we did in the second year.
