Got my 5K built and in and when I tried to crank it today she turned over very very slowly. Spins fine with the plugs out though.

 

Fairly certain its due to my high Compression Ratio (11:1ish). I'll check the earths again tomorrow and if I still can't get it to run then I will chase up a 5k Reduction starter next week. It has a 4k motor on it at the moment.

 

Just wanted to check other peoples thoughts as well

5K's had reduction starter motors fitted to them.

the following can cause voltage drop,

small leads, bad earths, even dirty battery terminals

Yeh I'll give those items a good going over tomorrow, if that fails me then I'll get on the blower to a few wreckers.

Reduction starter is THE best thing you will ever put on it. Oh, and do all of the above. :y:

I had the exact same problem with mine when the rebuilt 5K went in. Was using the old 4K starter which managed to turn it twice then give up. Replaced with a new reduction starter and had no worries. Higher compression + a tight new engine might just be a bit much for your current one to handle :y: But also check what KE30_KE35_KE55 suggested.

Damn, I'm going to need one of these reduction starters. Where do you get one and what are they worth??

You guys have confirmed my exact thoughts. I'm running a lot of comp so it's no surprise really.

 

I'll go for a tinker and make up some new earth cables, but I doubt I'll see much success. Sucks because I should have seen it coming, now I fly out for work tomorrow and it's another 10 days before she fires up!

I replaced my normal 4k SM with a reduction motor. Didn't see any increase in crank RPM. :y:

 

Have you also double checked the timing? If its around 20-30o BTDC when you're trying to start it this will give the same low crank speed as high comp or bad earths.

Oh and I paid $200 (trade price) for my brand new reduction starter

I think mine was around the $200 mark aswell. Are they even supposed to turn at a greater RPM? I thought it was just the initial turn had a heap more torque as opposed to the standard one or something along those lines. All I know is that they work well :yak:

They aren't supposed to crank it faster, they can use a smaller faster spinning motor to produce a higher starting torque.

 

BUT - I don't need one. I bought some new battery terminals, cleaned the posts right up, trimmed back the cables to get some clean non-oxidised copper and BANG it fired up almost straight away! Unreal, I timed it and mucked around a bit and it's running alright.
