salvage Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 hey guys i know theres plenty of threads on the various things I'm going to ask i just need any general help and advice on this BEFORE i make mistakes! ok this is the deal, iv just bought a 82' ke70 no rust! 160000k's i will be setting this car up for track use, mainly drift though, and the odd sprint or whatever, iv decided on the ca18det, reasons, the price is good, fits easy, plently of go-go etc i know I'm going to need: -limited slip diff (and i will NOT be welding up any standard ones) -roll cage?- will you be allowed on track without one? -need some info on a suitable tailshaft, or modification to the original -info on engine mount modifications -info on manual conversion -and whatever suspension info, I'm pretty sure s13 silvia suspension fits right on though. -and anything else you think I'm going to need to investigate thanks in advance guys, Quote
OniBerserker Posted April 9, 2009 Report Posted April 9, 2009 efi fuel setup is going to be needed hilux diffs are supposed to be pretty solid half/full cage you will have to get cams approved engine mounts should just be a bit of metal fabrication you will need the hydro clutch setup (if its auto you will need a pedalbox) look for sr s13 front struts, as sr's have better brakes than ca ones (going coilovers or not?) front suspension should be easy, but you can't run negative offset as s13 struts give wack offset thats just off the top of my head you should read as many buildup threads to estimate cost and time spent on these types of conversions not trying to discourage you but its a fair bit of work Quote

salvage Posted May 20, 2009 Author Report Posted May 20, 2009 thanks for the help. apprently rb30 engine mounts suit? confirm? what modifications are required for the ca gearbox? oh and last Q. tailshaft, i got an auto Kseries tailshaft, would that be suitable to mod? Quote
the witzl Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 salvage - i would get a custom tailshalft made.... the stock one is just too small, and the unis will explode with any decent amount of power. Also agree regarding the S13 suspension. Although its possible to fit it... the geometry will be all out, and will totally mismatch with the rear suspension making for an unpredictable handling car. There are prefabbed engine mounts to fit CA18 into AE86 sprinter, which will be useable in your KE70 if you swap in an AE71 engine crossmember. Quote
LukeAE71 Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 + 1 on what Witzl said, enough people have done this conversion now that engine mounts are readily available. Read as many build threads as you can to get an idea of what works and what doesn't. What state are you in?? How much money do you have? (serious question) This build will cost you about $10K at least so be prepared. *waits for everyone else to tell me it can be done cheaper* S13 suspension does not work, makes steering heavier than anything I have driven one I should know. Basically you need to investigate costs and whether you think it will be worth it. An S13 will be a cheaper proposition in the long run and they are easier to slide. If you are not concerned with rego an S13 ready to drift can be had for $6K ready to roll on the track. Really depends what you want.... Quote
the witzl Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 Luke speaks a fair bit of wisdom here. Buying an already modified car will save you BUCKETLOADS of money compared to doing all the work yourself. Even if you buy a car that is fully modified, but has a different engine to what you want - it will still end up cheaper than starting with a stock car.... cos all the "extras" have been done for you, like the fuel system, diff, suspension, driveline, wheels, and maybe even bodywork and interior. Speaking from experience, it is ALWAYS cheaper to buy an already modified car, and just change it to meet your tastes, rather than start from scratch. Of course, if you want the whole "hands on" feel of building the car from a stock POS - then nothing compares. Quote
