i am doing some research on corolla motors and have found some interesting stuff about them, i have a suzuki 4wd thats been converted to a 4k (thats what it says on the rego sticker). i bought the car of a wrecking yard with no motor, just corlla 4 speed box and heaps of spare heads and stuff.

 

i was just wondering why heaps of people choose the 4k with 5 speed and not the 3k/5k with 4speed/5 speed, as i would really like to put a 5k i have in it.

Probably because 4k's are more common and cheaper than a 5k.

 

A 5k would obviously be better with the extra torque.

To quickly answer the question - "why heaps of people choose the 4k"? Because its the most available and cheapest K motor.

Most wouldn't bother with a 3k because of the size - although a 4k is not much bigger it does have a bit more torque.

5k's normally sell on here from anywhere from $100 (junker) to $500, so although the bigger capacity and even more torque is good you could get several 4k's for the same price.

 

If your zuk has already had a 4k in it then fitting your 5k will be very straight forward.

The only thing you'll really need to check is the flywheel. If it has a corolla K40 in it then you need to use a corolla flywheel and clutch kit. Depending on weather the 5k you have has already been fitted to a corolla it may have a corolla flywheel on it (which has a 180mm clutch plate surface). If it hasn't been touched since its removal from a liteace then it'll have a 200mm flywheel on it - Swap to a corolla FW and you're set. :y:

 

I have a '94 Murati (Indian made) Sierra - see pic in sig, which I'm actually about to fit a 7kc (1800cc K motor) in. Then I have more even stuff planned for it. :)

Thanks heaps, ill think ill go with A 5K, ill try and find a k50 5 SPEED, if i can't get a cheap K50, ill stick with the 4 speed

 

P.S. do K40's and K50's have the same mounting brackets, i know Ke70 5 speeds have the shifter further back, but do KE55 5 speed boxes have the shifter and brackets in the same spot?

Yeah assuming you have a KE55 style 4 speed, a KE55 style 5 speed is a straight swap. :y:

To make the 3/4/5k work on steep angles stick a 1.3 sierra carby on it, gives it a little more grunt too. or go whole hog and get a 4ke efi set up like i am in the process of doing right now.

 

In an lj a 4k would be even better cause they are smaller and lighter than a sierra.

Rollasrus, what is involved in putting the 4ke efi setup on a 5k motor?? What model/make can you get these from??

 

I have just bought a 86 sierra ute with a 5k motor and 5 speed box in it. I don't know what box is in it yet as i have only just bought it and i need to get under it to have a better look. I took it off road and the carbi just flooded half way up hills or on side angles so i need to do something to correct that cause i was stuck places where i didn;t want to be stuck.
