Listen up children, its storytime with Mr Hardware!

Well let me tell you a little about myself. I've always wanted to own a Holden. My dad has only ever owned Holdens. He buys them brand new and keeps them until they turn 10 years old and trades em in for a new Holden. His old man does this also. This has been 'what is the done way' in the family since 1964.

My first car? 1980 KE55 Toyota Corolla. I've had it now for 11000km and it is ticking over like a gold watch.

I am a mechanic's hand for yellow cabs, so i know a little about EFI 6 cylinders.

I have never ever tuned a car in my life, nor seen it done.

Anyway, one of my mates at tafe said to me one day, i think your car could benefit from a tune up. I said, yeah but i don't know how to do it. So he said, well, find the gregorys manual for the car and i'll bring in my timing light and dwell meter and we'll have some fun.

Before Tune:

Idle revs: 700rpm

Dwell angle: 60deg

Timing: Off the scale it was so retarded. It guess about minus 3deg.

After tune

Idle revs: 1050rpm

Dwell angle: 44deg (i know its supposed to be 46, but it will only increase as the points wear)

Timing: 6deg

We turned down the idle to about 780rpm and leaned the mixture out just a tiny bit.

The whole reason why I was considering getting rid of the corolla soon is cos it was, well, a bit slow.

For the first time i can drag people off at the lights big time. I can hit 60 from the lights and see a sea of headlights in my rear vision mirror.

My recommendation:

If you want power out of your car, don't worry about PULP or other silly mods. Just give it a good service and a good tune!
