my manifold has a f@$ked stud on the bottom of the collector (4KC) and now has no gasket on the bottom of the collector

Ive got a 3kc manifold (are they any different? worth giving her a quick port job?)

should i reused the old exhaust manifold gasket or get a genuine one??

do i need to remove the intake manifold to get the exhaust manifold off?

any answers well be greatly appreciated :D

Well... it depends...

You're best to take both manifolds off & fit a new manifold/head gasket. I use the $10 one-piece Durapro ones.

You can probably get the exhaust manifold off without taking off the carb, but I expect that will ruin the gasket and then you will have to take off the carb anyway!

I don't know if the 3K will fit, but if you have the carbs off you can try it then.

You could always lie on your back under the car and drill out the ruined stud and leave the manifolds in place.

... or whip off both manifolds and fit a set of extractors!

So which manifold has the farked stud? the inlet or exhaust? And what stud? the manifold>head ones or the mani>mani "hot box" gasket?

Always use a new gasket.

And its alwasy just easier to take both manifolds out together.

thanks for the reply taz,

manifold to "hot box"

i tried tightening the nut but the whole stud was turning and nothing

any difference 3kc manifold to the 4kc one?

thanks mate

f@$k now you got me thinking LOL! dw about taking the manifolds off , take the f@$ked stud out, put a new stud in and hopefully she will tightened, if it doesnt ill tap it out and use a bigger stud! cheers fellas!

The only difference from what I can see between a 3k and 4k manifold is that a 3k one has the twin pipes running from the base of the manifold to the exhaust pipe, where as the 4k has one pipe from the base of the manifold back..

....and that 3k would probably be from a ke30, and the 4k was from a ke70.

If its one of the hot-box bolt thats turning it'll be because its snapped off in the ex manifold. They've just gone hot>cold way too many times and have become brittle. When I originally setup my J-pipe turbo setup I had to buy 3x ke70 single exit ex manifolds before I got one that didn't have a snapped bolt in it. And that was only because I told the wrecking yard I wanted them to seperate it for me. Took them over 3 hours with an oxy torch heating the manifold and slowly removing the stud to get it...... and they charged me like $60 for the part in the end but I was happy cause it didn't have a snapped bolt in it.

The best thing I think you can do is just try and find a set of extractors and get rid of the hot-box all together!!! :D

well i tried tightening ages ago and the whole stud was turning on a angle, so i tried to undo it but it came out a bit then i didnt have the strength to undo it with a 1/2 inch ratchet.

ill try to take the f*cked stud out and replace the stud if it doesnt snap

1) If the tread is f@$ked ill tap it out and use a slightly lager stud,

2) If that fails ill use the 3kc manifold

or if i get really annoyed ill cut the flange off the "Hot Box" and weld it straight on the manifold :jamie:

update

i remove the buggerd stud without causing to much dramas

why is the idler arm so close to the exhaust? anyone else had this problem?

post-8435-1259923053_thumb.jpg post-8435-1259923087_thumb.jpg

theres a 1mm gap between the exhaust and the idler arm witch leads me to believe thats what cause the stud to bend.post-8435-1259922992_thumb.jpg

i tried to lower/raise the engine mounts to get more clearance but nothing. engine mounts aren't cracked/sagged. so i cracked the shits and cut a small bit of the top of the idler mount off. now theres a 6mm gap.

hers a pic of what was left of the gasket

yeh I don't even like ezy outs that much.

Just twin sidedraft it, forget all your woes.

The exhaust has probably been replaced at some point and they've definitely run it too close to the idler. I'd hate to think what it's done to the idler bushes heat wise.
