want2race Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Can any one help with a name of someone who may do a modification to the front struts on a KE55 to allow for the correct negative camber required for speedway. I have an adjustable top shock mount but cannot get enough camber due to running heavy springs and a non lowered ride height. Alternatively a lower control arm camber adjuster kit if anyone knows of one. Also can anyone offer advise of what might be a decent shock for the four corners for speedway use. Quote
sam k Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Hey mate, in my speedway carrrr (corolla) for camber on the front left what we did was bend the bottom of the strut until the desired camber was reached. you don't want to go to much as it is on clay and doesn't have the same grip as tarmac. we used oxy to heat it up but I'm pretty sure pedders or other suspension places have a press with a camber dial on it. As to shock I used BOGE shocks in the front with falcon springs, and I think monroes in the rear. When I was racing eveyone had there out side jacked up almost higher than stock, mine was probaly the lowest and I still reckoned it handled better it kept on line better gave less understeer ect. Also some thing elso worth trying is getting say a semi slick tyre I used a yoki advan 185/65 13 for when the track just starts to go black, everyone thought we were crazy doing this but when the track is dry it is very grippy and the soft compound worked alot better than the normal cut up grooved tyre in dryer conditions. sam. altezzaclub Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Yeah we used to heat the stripped strut tube in a vice with an oxy torch and put a length of pipe on the stub axle to bend it. You can measure the triangle that the strut makes in the car and work out how far to bend it to get the negative you want. Then we'd cut 75mm off a spare tube, slice it lengthwise and weld the half-tubes on over the bend to reinforce it. Then go rallying over jumps... Quote

Cheers Sam, Thanks for the advice. I was never aware of a press with a camber dial. I will look into it. As for the front shocks, did you use the same on both sides and i guess same on the rear where a heavier one is used on the right ??? Quote

The speedway rules don't allow for mods to the suspension as in lengthing lower control arms$ etc, but i reckon this will work. thanks Quote

The whole right side of the car was fairly tight, but the left was a fair bit softer. Quote
Evan G Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 apprently a ke70 strut has smaller spring hat and spring so you can use a camber top, i orderd camber tops then fitted them to find out they only move 1mm  Quote
