1981 Ke55 Coupe Engine Modifications

Hey all first of all i own a 1981 KE55 Coupe (RWD) it has a Stock 3 Speed Automatic 4K-C Engine which has just clocked 105,000 K's.

I would like to overhaul the engine something like the one 1JZKe55 is selling here: http://www.rollaclub.com/board/index.php?showtopic=35446

I have gone gaga for the engine in this car and as i haven't got the $$ to buy it outright i would have to buy the stuff from here and there each week.

The thing that is troubling me the most is where to start? I need to find a key starting point where i can keep the car i have on the road as much as possible yet keep the engine construction under way. Any tips, help, places to shop, people who are selling parts that are needed. I need all the help i can get on this car.

I'm trying to find a 5K engine Raffs Rolla has offered a 5K bottom but I'm not sure what i need to add to that to make it complete. Then i think should i be getting the 5K first or getting the other parts like extractors, efi, turbo, supercharger and so on.... I'm lost in all the parts..

Can someone give me a tiny kick in the a$$ towards the right direction please and then keep kicking me later on whenever i get stuck like this :P

Thanks all Tyler.

Instead of just securing a bottom end, it'd likely pay to track down a complete 5K.

In the mean time, putting together the supercharger kit and testing it out on your current engine may be helpful to work out the kinks while you set up your 5K to handle boost...

That said, to keep the car on the road as long as possible, it may pay to set up your complete engine and manual (i hope) transmission and then spend the weekend swapping them across once you are dead set that it'll all drop in and run sweet.

Anyways, sounds like you've got your work cut out for you...

I've bought two 5k's in pieces in the past; ie boxes of bits. I was fortunate, one of them was complete, the other was missing some of the pieces out of the hydro lifters. I consider myself pretty bloody lucky because it's pretty hard to be certain you've got all you need to build a complete motor when it comes in 5 different boxes.

It's the small fiddly shit that will bite you.

Take his advice, buy yourself a complete engine. piecing together bit by bit will be painful. Also, I would always recommend that a beginner start with a complete engine because you can slowly pull it apart and learn what's what.

oh so a complete 5k engine is a must have on my shopping list...

and with the supercharger kit on my current engine is it going to be ok? I preferably don't want to blow anything. I'm assuming I'm looking for a SC14? I will have a look out for one but keep the 5K my number 1 priority. thanks guys

SC14 or SC12... depends what boost you want to run really... The SC14 will have higher boost capabilities and be able to run with less overdrive= longer charger life.

The thing with boosting is it essentially means higher compression from having more air in the engine. This means more stress on the engine, which, if too much, means blowing things up. Easiest way to ensure a longer living engine is lower the compression, tune it properly, run good quality/higher octane fuels and drive within the limits of the engine.

have a good long read through some of the boost theory threads that are all over the place in here... learn from others, work out what combination would best suit your needs/budget and go from there.

A complete motor would be good yes, but...... (going against the grain here) thinking further down the track you might want to build a lower comp motor. If this is the case the easiest way is to fit a 3k or 4k head on the 5k bottom end. For this reason, buying a 5k bottem end ONLY wouldn't be such a bad idea ) provided it still has all the pistons etc in it. You can then collect over time the head (maybe a ported one) and the appropiate push-rods and lifters depending on if you want to go solid or keep it hydro.

The first thing I would probably do is get some extractors on the motor (assuming that you don't have any already) as this won't change when the charger is fitted and running.

Then some other parts to look out for are:

K series air con bracket - this is the easiest way to mount the charger.

Apropiate sized and type (ie v-beld or ribbed) pullies for your desired boost

SU carby - These are the easiest way to setup a K changer system in "draw-through" configuration.

Decent electic fuel pump.

It looks like a variation of the Eaton M45 which mercs used for 1-2 litre engines. It'll be possible performance wise, but you're going to have a hell of a time mounting it as the inlet and outlet ports are on the same side, much like this unit here:

CAPA have info on them though including performance charts:

There's an escort that I have seen running an m90 from a commodore on it's 2litre, have also seen a pic of a 5k in the states running one (it's a Buick blower after all), the move a serious amount of air, sound unreal and suck a hell of alot of power to run them! You would need a pretty serious motor to run something that alone displaces more air in litres per revolution than your k motors capacity! Mind you, it looks huge (read: friken awesome!) hanging off the side.

Back to the m45, there are heaps of variantions of eaton blowers, I have seen m45s with the inlet at the rear and bottom outlet like the commodore m90, this would work well, give plenty of grunt without using to much, give a much cooler air temp than any sc blower and you can run themin blow through or draw through config.

But after all that, you can still pick up sc14s for under $400, that's stills cheap blower and much easier to mount.

My mate kickn5k has been playing with an sc12 equiped 5k, makes almost 100kw at the rears on a bad tune and scares most wrx and skyline drivers... And it was done on a tight budget, shoot him a pm for some questions, I'm sure he will be happy to help.

Oh, and I would be happy with a complete bottom half of a 5k, your not going to need the head anyway
