G`day mate, I was obviously wrong thinking it was the locking mechanism.

From memory the hinges are attached to the rear parcel shelf or there abouts. Can you get inside the boot with a torch or something and see if the part where the hinge attaches is bent upwards or not. Or remove the parcel shelf cover itself. Its possible that the hinges are stiff and the boot has been pushed down with a bit of force thereby bending the mounting area. That would put the hinge geometry way out. If it is, I guess that its big rubber hammer time from the inside if you are game. Dunno how else except to take it to a panel beater or something.

do you know if its been in any accidents where its been hit in the arse end cause it only has to be a slight tap in the backend and you can have problems i had that problem on a car that i have owned before do what people hav said to do hope into the boot with a torch and have a good look at the alignment of the boot and mark any suss areas with a texta the main area that i had problems was the latch part if thats so grab each side of the latch on the car and give it a few hard tugs then try to close the boot if it needs a bit more oomph jump back in the boot put your foot on the latch part and push real hard

if unsure whether its been in a slight rear ender look under the bumper bar if its missing paint or a little bit bent then good chances are its been hit in the backend

To me it looks in the first pic is of that bracket thing jamming up on the wall.

Have you tried closing the lid from each top corner (where the badges are) ? One side, i reckon, would be a lot easier to push down then the other side. Bit of fault tracing.

Other then that - mark where the bolts are and take the lid off, pull the parcel shelf out and push down on each hinge or jump into the boot and pull down on each hinge.

Was it closing before?

Had a similar problem with a camry.

The spring that holds the boot open was mounted the wrong way round, so when the boot was forced closed it snapped!

Welded it back up, mounted properly right way round and its been working fine since
