my best was 29.88

damn moke was 29.84 - so my maths was a bit wrong

second was 29.47 in a cortina gt, so i am going to have to get a wriggle on

I was 4th fastest overall in the 4th session though... that may have been related to pissing down rain and half the field didnt run :)

Phillip Island 6 Hour this weekend... relay regularity event where there are 6 cars in the team, each car doing an hours stint.

Its a great event and I am really looking forward to it.

Charade is just about ready.. I should probably give it an oil change... and I need to replace a missing power steering pump bolt - me thinks someone didn't tighten it up properly last event when he adjusted the belt before rob roy....dickhead!

If any one is looking for something to do on Sunday come and pay us a visit, we could do with some assistance on the timing wall.

Phillip Island 6 hour has been run and won... not by us!

DeTomato was awesome again. Rained pretty heavy for Saturday practice and I think I may well have had the most fun ever on a race track. Had a bit of a spin, as did many others, but it was heaps of fun and I got out grinning like a lunatic.

Sunday race theoretically you are running at nine tenths as you are trying to hit your nominated time, rather than your fastest time. However, I nominated a 2.10 ... but ended up doing a fastest of 2.08.8626 - faster than the Charade had been before and did it quite easily. There is still heaps of time in my driving in Turn 1, 2, 4, 5, and the last turn... and hell probably the whole circuit... though I am flat from Siberia through to MG.. so I dunno how I can go any faster there!!

Still got about a second to go before I catch the Corolla's lap time...but I reckon its going pretty damned good for a road registered car that is still carrying all its carpet and seats and is running monroe gt gas shocks!

Improvements to the car over last year were the Project Mu brake pads, which proved to me again how much better they are than the QFM pads I had in it last year... the king low springs (std height kings last year)... and the sparco seat.

There is a a rotational noise in the left rear I noticed on the way home, which might be a bearing or a dodgy old tyre, so will have to investigate that. I am thinking I might try and finally get the Koni's and some camber bolts into it before the Winton 6 hour.. but we will see.

Happy days

Charade now has Konis and camber bolts all round.

Also replaced the rear wheel bearings which made the noise go away in the rear.

Just about ready for the Winton 6 hour now

Charade looks the goods, How'd you go in the 6 hour? I'm sure it would of made a difference with the Koni's and the Camber!

I will happily take those Koni shocks off your hands  haha

Unless you would happen to be have a spare set of Koni's lying round, I'd be happy to buy.

Just wondering, how did you come across these? Do you know someone else that might have some?, I'm having trouble finding a set, even just the front two would do.

Thanks

Lachie

Catching up still on a whole lot of things, so I will do a proper update later, but in all the Charade went like a champion again.

Koni's I bought second hand from the daihard forums, and then had them rebuilt.

Just have to keep you eyes peeled.

Oh and given I just put them in the car and had them rebuilt, they aren't for sale.

Unless you want to pay about $1500 for them so I can get coil overs :)

Update after the Winton 6 Hour...

Prior to the event I finally got my Koni's rebuilt and I inserted them under the Tomato, along with putting in some camber bolts front and rear, and doing the rear wheel bearings that had gotten noisy. That was a month before the event, and it was all I needed to do after the Island, so i was feeling chuffed about being prepped.. karma the bitch had other ideas!

The battery has been going flat for ages and ages, I thought from lack of use and a dodgy alarm system. So i replaced the battery and then my woes began.

That same night I drove it to a mate's workshop for a wheel alignment - lucky I did since it had 20mm toe in one side and 12mm on the other - while it was there we noticed acid leaking out of the new battery. Odd.

Cleaned it up, thought maybe it was over full or something, and then pressed on.

The trip to the wheel alignment also highlighted a massive vibration at 100km/h in the rear. Was it the wheel bearings I had just done, or was it the dodgy cheap second hand tyre I had put on my road wheels I wondered?

Swapped to my semi's the next day and the vibration went away, so that was one stress gone though they were doing a fair bit of rubbing which was new - turns out that was related to the weight of tools in the back!

However the battery had gone flat over night. Odd. Put it on charge, checked it as best I could without a multimeter on a gauge on a battery pack, and decided it was ok.

Drove it to work on the Friday, popped the bonnet, and found lots of acid again. Now with a proper multimeter, I found she was charging between 14 volts and 19 volts! No wonder the battery was stressing out! Dashed down to the local sparky and begged him to have a look as I was meant to be off to Winton that afternoon. He looked, he replaced with a new one and charged me $620 for the pleasure of having to deal with an import car that no one stocked parts for... ouch!

Anyways made it to Winton Friday night, so happy days.

The event itself went really well. The car was heaps easier to drive with the Konis and camber, and I got down to the times I normally do without the fuss I normally have, and was able to consistently nail my nominated time through out Sunday's regularity relay.

I was stoked with how well the car performed. Brakes are probably the next area of weakness to work on. By the end of my second stint there was a fair pulsing going on through the brake pedal. Pads are probably at the end of their life, as are rotors, so i will replace all that before the next event. Wish there was a simple big brake package I could bolt on, but no such luck! I am researching bigger rotors that might fit with some slight mods, and looking at twin piston calipers on different cars to see if they might be easily adaptable.

Improved my time in the Charade again.. best was a 1.49.87 and I would have done better had I not backed off to keep within my nominated time of 1.50. My fastest in the Ke35 was a low 1.49 so I am creeping up on it, and the joy of the Charade is I can hop in it and drive home down the freeway once the event is finished :)

Our team, Team Rising Sun, came 18th in the regularity relay, so we were massively happy with that since we had no real plan for the weekend other than to have fun. There were 41 teams in total, so it was a top result.

Gave the DeTomato a thrashing at Sandown yesterday at the Cup Day Sprint.

I replaced the front rotors after Winton, putting on some RDA slotted ones to get a little extra bite, and stuck with the same Project Mu pads, which continued to be awesome. Other than a wash, that was all the preparation she got before going to Sandown.

It was a good day, I played with the front shocks, stiffening them up each session, and seeing an improvement in my time each session.

Ultimately I bettered the best time I had done in the car by 2.5 seconds at Sandown, doing a 1.39.62. It was second in class, "pipped" by Pete in his green KE35 by a second in the last session.

Here is some in-car video - I have hit fast forward on all the bits where I am by myself which aren't so interesting.

As it turns out no.. its just a standard Charade engine bay so I have never thought to photograph it. What did you want to see?

Here are a couple of photos taken by Jeffersen Welsh at the Cup Day Sprint.

Lifting back wheels into corners!

This guy passed me on the way to turn one at the beginning of this lap.. made me laugh as he was braking into turn one and I was still on the gas. He held me up through two, three and four, then blew me away down the back straight. Got him again at Dandenong Rd, and then he suddenly backed off coming on to the main straight. Was fun while it lasted :)

Christmas Day was good and bad to the Charade...

She lives outside so she sadly copped a bit of a peppering from the big hail storm that came through Melbourne. Its not bad, and the shit paint hides it pretty well!

On the good side, I scored a Gopro HD Hero2 camera kit for capturing better race footage without annoying rattles in the audio! Happy days

very cool little car you have there, shame about the hail damage. you will love the GoPro, great cameras with endless possibilities! i bought a hero just a couple of months before the hero2 was announced :glare:

Update. Gave the Detomato a run at the vic hillclimb championship round held at broadford motorcycle complex. it was a really fun challenging circuit and i had a ball.

With no CAMS log book, I was in a "miscellaneous" class, so I was no where. Had I got it logbooked as Improved Production like I should have, I would have been second in class. Would of, could of, should of! Its the motto of motorsport.

Anyways a couple of videos from the new gopro. Soooo much better quality!!

My battery went flat for the third and fastest run which is a shame!
