Electric Water Pump on a 4agte, is it worth the power gains or just stick with the standard mechanical pump?

Yeah, you won't gain any huge amount of peak HP, you're still putting the load onto the alternator. But you're taking a restriction off the motor and letting it rev easily. The motor will pickup faster as it doesn't increase the flow rate of the cooling system as the revs climb, plus the water pump doesn't need to pump all the water through a restrictive thermostat. 1/4 mile run before and after and see if there's any difference if you go ahead with it.

i know I'm not gonna get massive power gains but i don't think it will be worth 3-5hp gain compared to a 20+hp gain, i test it out with my mates one before i buy one an see how much difference it makes.

What people forget about is torque delivery. A high flow water system just lets the motor rev out without strain. A dyno just tells you the peak efficiency of a motor, not the the way the power is put down, its all the area under the curve and every thing that reduces the strain on the rotating mass of an engine will make it pickup faster.

what you could do is wait for a coldish night,

 

take your car for a blast up the road,

 

then pull of your water pump/alternator belt. take it for another blast. I'm talking less than 10secs of driving here so it doesnt overheat. keep an eye on the temp and you'll be right.

 

if you feel an extra 40kw then buy an EWP, if not, don't worry about it!

 

or what you could do, is loosen your waterpump/alternator belt, if its squeeling its not stealing power from your engine;) haha

 

(note, i prolly wouldnt do this to my own engine, but I'm happy to experiment on yours...)

nah itll be fine! i ran my 4age for ages on just the battery, when i first put it in and was testing it in my garage, trying to figure out how to wire the alternator:P

 

just needed to charge it up every few hours!

 

i do like the idea of an electric water pump, but i can't see it being much use on a standard engine. though like beerhead sais..every little bit counts.

 

whats an electric pump cost anyway? from what i understand you have to buy the funky controller seperately or something.

Cousin got the ewp one the other from aussie auto for just under 300 bucks, will check if it has the controller with it.

if ur running a standard ecu, ud have to run a controller, but I'm running a microtech so ill run it off that.
