Just reading how people put 86 struts in their cars for improvements etc so i was shopping around... and i am wondering if i can buy a full aftermarket suspension set (front and rear) for an 86, can i use the control arms, steering arms, hubs, rotors and calipers from my ke70? They should line up / fit shouldnt they?

One website that I highly suggest if you want a bolt in affair.

thanks for that. wasn't really chasing a straight bolt in as such but was just looking at all the parts i need to source and was just seeing if i needed to get everything at once or if i could get the core parts and then extras later. I'm just picturing in my head that the 86 and e70 hubs should be the same at least so you can use the rotors/calipers on 86 struts for the time being.

just to clarify I was looking at a set up that comes complete with a spindle, that's why I am asking if i could use my ke70's hubs. rotors n calipers etc for the time being.

err thanks dude.... but that hardly explains my question... all it says is you need this n u need that without a explanation as to why... e.g are the spindles different diameter/lengths, different bearings etc etc...

Research at its best

Wheel bearings are the same - Protex PBK2900 (ke20 - ae86, including t-18)

Which would have to mean the spindles are the same diameter

Brakes are different

- ke3x/ke5x uses a 218mm dia x 30mm height x 10mm thick rotors (import brakes)

- ke3x/ke5x/ke70/ae71 uses a 218mm dia x 30mm height x 12.7mm thick rotors (local brakes)

- ke70 panel vans possibly use a 228mm dia x 32mm height x 12.7mm thick rotors

- ae86 sprinter uses a 234mm dia x 38mm height x 12.5mm thick rotor (possibly the same for the ae71 panel van)

- t-18 uses a 230mm dia x 24mm height x 12.7mm thick rotors

Calipers would be made to suit the position and width of the rotors - you'll in a world of hurt trying to fit the calipers from the imported ke30 to the struts and rotors of a ae86...

Which would have to mean that, yes, while the spindles might the same diameter their not the same length (if i'm wrong, i'm wrong)

Ball joints are the same - Protex BJ145

The control arm bushes are the same - Nolathane 45087

Which would mean the control arms are the same - BUT their not the same length (ke3x/5x are longer)

Strut top hats (the part that bolts the strut to the car body) are different.

Steering arms are different between the ke3x/5x/70 (ae71 ?)and the ae86/t-18 (ae71 ?)

The bolt spacing for the strut to steering arm is wider on the ae86/t-18

Brake hoses are the same - what screwed into the ke30 caliper will screw into the t-18 caliper.

And thats bit of the research i've done over the www

Edit - i left out a few odds and sods cause i can :lolcry:

The spindles are not the same on the AE86 as early KE70, the bearings are spaced wider. There are two different bolt spacings on the KE70, 87mm and 85mm. The AE86 is 85mm.

Basically you can swap complete matching components but mix and match (KE70 hubs on AE86 struts etc) won't work unless you have the later KE70 which I understand are pretty rare in Oz. The biggest problem with internet research is making sure the parts they are talking about are actually the same as what is available to you, for example my KE70 is using late KE70 steering arms to get RA23 struts fitted. Yes I have KE70 steering arms but the same swap won't work with the 87mm arms which are more common than the 85mm, my arms came out of a 1985 KE70 wagon which is after they stopped making the sedans.

how late is the later model? because i got a slant front made in 84? I also got ae71 fronts from the same year. guess i can only pull them apart and see if they fit, if not just gather the stuff over time..

owell i should be picking up a set of 86 struts and hubs this week some time... just got to get some calipers and rotors but while I'm at it i can just as well check the measurements on my ke struts as well.
