Recently bought a ke25 with a 4k engine. I know nothing about engines! So I need some help.

I'm having a hard time starting the car after I park it for 2-3 days. The previous owner told me to just add some fuel to the carb, remove the air filter cap and pour some fuel. This trick works, he said this is how these old engines are. Is this true? is there anything I can do so the 4k engine will start right up every time?

Please help! thanks in advance

You might get about a million replies to this. I've never heard of pouring oil down a carby, fuel or start ya bastard yes but not oil, kind of strange to me. My 3k started no problems when i first got it, pump the accelerator a few times before starting, crank apply choke and give it some revs, that's all i did when i first got it. after a rebuild though it's crank and pump the accelerator slightly and apply some choke, mostly in cold weather.

Have you checked the tuning?? Plugs clean and unworn? Points gap correct? Timing at 8-10deg??

Does it run fine once started? Low fuel usage, no misfires, no flat spots, revs out cleanly?? or does it have a carburettor problem that stops it starting easily.

It should start instantly and run smoothly, that's how old egines work!

You will need a Corolla manual to learn about these things, that's how old engines keep working!!

Once the engine starts, it idles smoothly, runs cool and strong. Only problem is getting it to start. Stevejw PM'd me saying it could be the carb draining fuel over the 2-3 days. I'll have a look and report back.

Check the timing with a light if you can, or manually if you haven't got a timing light. Retarded timing (less than 8deg) would indicate a worn points gap and make it hard to start.

The fuel drain idea sounds good. You could check that by lifting the air cleaner before you start it and looking down the carb while you pull the throttle cable a few times.

You should see petrol squirting down the throat from the pump jet working. If you have petrol there then the carb has enough in to start it.
