I have just about finished the 3k swap into my ke15 and am looking at the nect project. I purchased some late model celica gt wheels that are the 4x114.3 pattern and am trying to figure out what the easiest thing to do would be. Is there a different axle that I can swap in for the rear or should I just get rid of the celica wheels and go with the 4x110 pattern. The front seems to be an easy solution. What have you guys done on the rear??

Thanks in advance.

i have considered doing this with my ke15, but thought it isn't really worth the effort. there is no simple bolt in option. i have retained the standard stud pattern, and simply gone to mazda 13x5.5" steel rims, as they fit the car perfectly and allow me to run decent performance tyres in 185/60r13.

yea, the front is easy. just bolt on later hubs.

the back is a different story. you could adapt a ke20 diff housing as it is the next narrowest housing, and do a ke30 axle swap (need to trim each axle splined end about 3mm) to that to get your 4x114.3. the only problem is that it will be about 50mm wider which will limit wheel selection, unless you want to start flaring guards. doing the above swap won't make any difference strengthwise, you just end up with bigger self adusting drums and your 4x114.3. also you will need to fiddle around with handbrake cables and moving diff mounts.

maybe look into getting your existing axles and drums redrilled?

maybe you could investigate a rear axle from a datsun 1200, or 120y or something, to get the right width?

other than that you could look at something stronger and get it narrowed. but that is a bit overkill for a 3k.

ok, not to much wider.

i run the same wheel/tyre combo on both the ke15 and ke16. neither has a problem with scrubbing. even when fully loaded.

i agree, the wagon springs are a LOT harder. it doesn't handle anywhere as well as the ke15 in the rear. having a load on board helps a lot.

Mikey,

You're out in the midwest(US), right? What's a te28? I'm still trying to figure out all of the model designations.

It's on my to do list to find the mazda wheels, I just really liked the look of these celica wheels.

Thanks again.

RIGHT THEN!

Looks like I have aquired a set of rx-7 wheels. We'll see how long it takes to get them. Now, what is the largest tire that I can run with the stock setup on a ke15, I have two sets of 225/45/13 hoosiers that are free if they fit. Is this even a slight possibility?

Thanks,

Glenn

probably 185s on the front, maybe 205s if the wheels are the right offset, but i doubt it on a ke1x, there's not much room there

there's usually a bit of room under the back, i'd expect 205 or 225s if the wheels are a good offset. you can also space the leaves in 5-10mm for a bit more space

Doug can probably confirm completely, but I think Jamie's right, 185's are about the biggest. If they're early RX7 wheels, they'll only be 5.5" wheels, and 225's wont go on them anyway.

It figures, with two full sets of streetable tires sitting here staring me in the face that they wouldn't fit. I guess it's par for the course. When I get the rims I'll check it out. I thought they were wider originally to fit the tires. They are early rx7 wheels 81-83.

This board rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again,

you'll also find that fitting tyres larger than 185 to a corolla is counterproductive to wet weather handling. they're only light, so you give them a big footprint and they have a tendancy to aquaplane alot more

on a little 10, you could even get away with 165 cheesecutters, especially if you're leaving the rest of the car stock with venetians and whatever. gives it a nice "grandpa's old stocker" sort of look

the correct sizes for ke10 speedo accuracy are 185/60/13 and 165/70/13

(good point about 5.5" wheels too, i didn't even think of that)
