Dan'S 1980 Ke55 Rolla

howdy folks, this may not be everyones glass of beer with the plans to come but i'm pretty chuffed that i finally have another one and after scouring the car sales and places like that for some time now i actually found this one sitting in a backyard around the corner and about 1km down the road. have seen it sit there for nearly 2 years now not doing a thing so i thought i'd knock on the door and hit em up for it, an hour later it was sitting in my backyard begging to be loved. but anyway, enough of the fairytale stories.

it's a 1980 Toyota Corolla, little neglected as most of them are but reasonably straight, some rust in the usual places, the kids of the lady i bought it off had done a backyard spray job in some crappy looking yellow paint which is flaking off in places, has a reasonably rare factory 5 speed manual, all fairly standard really.

so the plans are as follows........strip everything to a rolling shell as i don't have a car space for it yet to get super serious, ineterior will go to the tip (not sure on the dash yet and i will probably retain the factory steering wheel just for the hell of it), motor and gearbox out (may try selling the gearbox once it's out), going to my godfathers place this saturday to look at a 308ci holden v8 with various other goodies and spares including a salisbury diff if i decide to use it, if all is good then the 308 will make its way into the car eventually for dummy fit amongst everything else before getting a little boogie up its bum, tubbed ass end 15" rims, and piss the yellow off for something else.

generally, all i want is a silly buggers car, will never be registered, won't be a show bitch (well and truly over that crap with my other money pit), just a neat enough reliable little thing that'll chuck a good skid at the nats, powercruise, skid pan days etc. won't be overly powerful as i figured that a healthy 308 in an 855kg corolla will be plenty enough get up and go to test me out. the main thing that is set in concrete is that there WILL be a hole in the bonnet regardless of whether it has a supercharger up top or just a little air filter.

if anyone has any ideas or can lead me in the right direction to smokey fun your help will be appreciated.

time for some pics of the day it arrived at it's new home:

Well done mate. :y:

Plans for this sound absolutely insane! Someone's actually fitted a 308 into one of these without modifying the Firewall or Radiator Support, but it was a tight fit - but, as usual, he did have to cut open the Trans tunnel to fit in the Trimatic. :)

You could probably go with a Ratrod style for this thing if it's only gonna be used for the Skidpans. Flat Black, Black and Red Stockies with Whitewalls, Peep Mirrors, Venetians, Nanna-Visor, and last but not least, Slam!

This is gonna be insane when it's finished. All the best with it. ;)

Josh

thanks fella's, i'd say i'll end up with this motor this weekend as it sounds like it'll be fine. hopefully get the interior stripped sometime this week or next including fuel tank (haven't seen how big it is but i'd assume being where it is situated that the tubs will not allow for that positioning), then after that it'll be drivetrain out and see how long it takes to drain the wallet. will keep you all informed of the proceedings anyways

Love the idea. Matter of fact I have one in the build at the moment. I'll post some in the build pics soon. I'm gonna keep the 4k in it for now though, see how long I can get away with 15x10's on the rear with 295's. I'm fairly confident :hmm:

Still haven't sorted exactly how it's gonna fit, springs will almost certainly need to be moved

sounds tops, you doing mini tubs i gather? you could always ghange to coil springs instead of leafs, that'd make things under the back a little tidier, i am thinking of doing that or changing to coilovers, depends on how much room i have with the new diff.

got busy wednesday morning before getting on the piss for australia day, pulled out front and rear seats, all seatbelts as i won't be needed them, centre console, carpet and underlay, speakers and wiring, parcel shelf, boot carpet including jack etc, and the fuel tank cover. took me all of about 2 hours which was a little quicker than i thought. floor is surprisingly in really good condition with the only bit looking a little second hand being the section of steel covering the front inside passenger seat bolt, one can only assume that either the thread block on the back had come off or there was a stripped thread once upon a time that required a nasty little hack job to fix, doesn't worry me at all though, will soon fix that up when i get around to it. anyway, here's for some pics:

Looks like leaf springs are gonna be too hard, or just too much work for no real gain. thinking triangulated crossmember type 4 bar at the moment. Want to keep back seats in it if at all possible. It's definitely not a straightforward job, but I'm enjoying it though. Would love to get a look under the rear of OKE020 or WHOSUP cars

mmmmm decisions decisions. will let you know of ideas if i get mine happening first, and same for you if you could.

had a look at a collection of motors yesterday, plans at the present are to use the 308 block, b-cast heads that will be massaged a little and bring the compression up a fair bit, will stick with 308 cubes, pick a camshaft that meets my good old rule of thumb measure of 'biggest is best' as i want this thing to sound like it's really pissed off and wants to eat someone lol, high rise manifold, and run it on methanol because it makes more power, and partly because it smells nice (there is going to be partial personal taste in this build just because i can haha). gearbox will be a turbo 400 3 speed auto with a b&m shifter on top and the diff will be a shortened salisbury with a mini spool centre, no idea on diff gears yet, will be one of those wait till we try it things

Had a look through the thread, is a leaf sprung 2 link set up. Seems to work well though, 8 seconds and near 180mph are proof of that!! I am still thinking that I want some type of 4 link in mine, the research continues.
