trelf Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 ok so got me a reasonable KE20 for $250 and i really want to upgrade the rear brakes/diff. Anyone know if a drum to drum from a later model KE is relatively easy to swap over?? and the complications of doing so?? Also, what diff is in the 74 KE20? because mine is NOISY! Any help would be apprectiated as this car will be my first project :) Cheers Quote
Jono.C Posted February 12, 2011 Report Posted February 12, 2011 (edited) afaik you cannot use diff's from a new model corolla as yours is leaf springs and ke70 onwards is coil sprung. You may be able to grind off the spring perches and such and have leaf mounts welded on. Might pay to talk to an engineer and get his opinion Edited February 12, 2011 by Jono.C Quote
trelf Posted February 12, 2011 Author Report Posted February 12, 2011 Hmmm. I see. Do you know what series diff is in the KE20? anything interchangable at all within other Toyotas? Quote
Jono.C Posted February 12, 2011 Report Posted February 12, 2011 not sure what series the diff is, might say somewhere on the firewall. i've heard of ta22 diff's being shortened and used or you might get somewhere with a ke30 diff but that'd most likely have to be shortened and mounts moved Quote
trelf Posted February 12, 2011 Author Report Posted February 12, 2011 What about converting the rear brakes to that of maybe a KE55? They're still leaf springs aren't they? Because KE30 - 55 diffs wouldn't go into KE20 would they?? Quote
Jono.C Posted February 12, 2011 Report Posted February 12, 2011 just thinking a guy i know has either a ke30 diff or ke30 drums and axles in his ke20. Not sure which. You might get lucky. But either way a ke30 is 4x114.3 and a ke20 is 4x110 so your wheels wouldn't fit on the back Quote
trelf Posted February 12, 2011 Author Report Posted February 12, 2011 Wheels shouldn't be an issue (i can source them easily) If you find out who it is please let me know via pm or something :) Quote
coln72 Posted February 12, 2011 Report Posted February 12, 2011 Need to do a search, it has been covered heaps. In a nut shell. pull old axels and brakes. Get hold of some KE55 axels and brakes, don't bother with KE30 as they arent much bigger if any. Need to get later model axels shortened a bit. Approx. 5mm off the spline from memory. Can turn them down in a lathe. fit into KE20 housing. Just be careful as there are two different types of diffs. Jap and Borg Warner and I don't think you can interchange axels..... You can also change the front bolt pattern to match very easily but you can look that up :) Quote
trelf Posted February 19, 2011 Author Report Posted February 19, 2011 cheers, that helps heaps. How do i find out what one i have?? I didn't know KE55s had both jap and borg warner parts... interesting :) Quote
KEhendo Posted February 19, 2011 Report Posted February 19, 2011 borg warner have a plate that bolts on from the back. the japanese difs have a centre that unloads from the front. Quote
trelf Posted February 19, 2011 Author Report Posted February 19, 2011 thanks heaps! Much appreciated! Quote
