Ok, The 20V motor went in today. Went in quite smoothly......

So, after getting the motor in, I then went to fit the 'AE71' G box crossmember. But, the X member was not wide enough. It would bolt to the mount on the box, but then it wouldn't bolt up to the car body.

I then got out the AE86 gearbox X member, which has 4 bolt holes to mount to the body. Only 2 of the holes would align, but since the KE70 and 'AE71' x member both only had 2 mount holes anyway, I just used the AE86 one with just 2 bolts attaching it to the KE70 body.... All bolted up and was very secure....

When the 'AE71' crossmember was sold to me, I was told it was a AE71 crossmember, but it's not... Turns out It was from a TE71, which is the same as the panelvans, so thats where the confusion was with the seller. Not to worry, the seller happily refunded the money

Then I connected all plugs and wiring. No problems there.

I still have to tidy/finalise the wiring and secure the ignition coils to the engine bay.

Getting closeer now....

  • 2 weeks later...

Not much has happened recently on the 70, as I've been away for work and J Riftin and I have been participating in some of the local events (Celica Club Cruise and MG Car Club Motorkhana).

I recently found out though that a 2 day drift Matsuri is being held at Wakefield raceway at the end of November, and was so excited that I have signed up. This means that we now have just over 2 months to get the car drift ready!

For this to happen though we still have a bit to do:

TO FIT:

  • Gearbox x/member spacer (Sam Q)
  • Add gearbox oil
  • Change Diff oil
  • Attach water lines to heater core
  • Velocity Stacks (Sam Q)
  • Fit Extractors
  • Install Drive Shaft
  • Install fuel pump, lines, pickup etc...
  • Re-install/fabricate dash instruments
  • Push button (for start)
  • Hydraulic handbrake and modify lines
  • Bonnet pins
  • Seats and belts
  • Fire extinguisher (need to purchase)
  • Radiator (need to determine which to use and how to modify, ie AE86, AE71 etc)
  • Fit Rear AJPS Springs and shocks
  • Engine Service (oil, filters, Alt belt)
  • Tighten Clutch master cylinder
  • Attach Clutch hardlines
  • Decide on wheels, purchase tyres
  • Coilovers

Making/fit:

  • Exhaust system
  • Modified hydro brake lines
  • Tune of ECU (as it might be lean once the velocity stacks are fitted)
  • Paint bonnet (Black)
  • Weld diff

Need to test the following:

  • All wiring (and that engine starts etc)
  • Appropriate lights work
  • Brakes (especially rears as the state of the drum brakes are unknown)
  • Steering works (as some of the parts were from the 86)

If by some miracle we manage to get all that done and we have lots of time left, we can look at some of the optional cosmetic stuff:

  • Stickers!!!11!! (Need a custom "SLOTH" across the car somewhere and probably the number 70 on the doors)
  • Drift-spec bumper

Looks like we have our work cut out for us....

So J Riftin and I set out to do a bit of work on the 70 over the weekend. We got a bit done.

  •
  • A fair bit of time was spent screwing around trying to fit the hardlines for the handbrake and clutch.
  • Currently two of the trumpets are fitted (as we wanted to leave some room at the back to play with wiring etc).
  • The gearbox spacer is in, giving a little more clearance between the firewall and back of the engine, though not quite as much as we were hoping.
  • We decided not to bother connecting up the heater.
  • Hydraulic handbrake is bolted in.
  • Throttle cable is hooked up.
  • Fuel lines connected in the engine bay (started looking a surge tank to mount in the boot).

I've updated the list above with the tasks complete.

Couple of pics of the installation of the trumpets.

The trumpets are 43mm and were purchased from SamQ.

I've heard that these air filters (http://www.pipercross.net/competition/products_socks.asp) are probably the best for something that won't restrict the airflow too much. Otherwise I will probably run it without filters (as it will be a track car not driven on the road/dirt).

Did a bit more work on the 70 last weekend.

Got the hydraulic handbrake and all the lines fitted. Added clutch fluid and bled the system.

Added an air filter for the idle and fitted the last two trumpets. After some research we started looking into how to mount the air flow sensor and connect up some of the last bits and pieces. There are still some wiring issues to be sorted out as well.

We fitted the extractors and discovered that they are touching the oil filter :S Looks like we will need to remove the extension. They also sit really low....

Discovered that one of the lower trailing arms is a bit bent, so I'll need to replace that before I get it on the track.

The next step will be to fit the drive shaft, purchase a surge tank, sort out the final wiring issues and fix the clearance issues with the oil filter.

I also got in contact with someone regarding some stickers/vinyls... so it will look drift spec soon

done yet

Unfortunately not :(

Last weekend was spent at Toyota Fest, this weekend my friend who is helping out (doing most of the work) is away, since the car is stored at his place I can't really do much on it.

By the end of this weekend though I'm planing to have designs done for some of the stickers/vinyls and have them sent off to the printers :D

Dis car is soo sweet maan.. how u get dat enjin in dere bro haha? I thort tha 20V waz a fwd motor lolz. mayb 1 dai my KE wil be liek urs!

Haha just trolling Sloth. I was keen to come check out your ignition this weekend, but I'm going fishing up in Sussex Inlet. The ignition is the only difficulty I should have with putting mine in, so it can be ready for the Matsuri. The KE70 will be schliding alongside yours - well, more like 20 metres away anyway :P I have many, many stockies :) Did you get any time to try out those extractors on the Red Rocket?

I got the whole package installed in my old 86 by a mechanic a couple of years ago. He did all the hard yards, so I'm a little bit ignorant about what it took to convert it to RWD and put it all in.

The ignition is using a coilpack from a 90s Subaru and set up with a Link G4 Storm programmable ECU.

So we got a little more done this weekend...

Took out the stock springs and shocks and fitted some Pedders shocks and 6kg AJPS springs, cutting a little off the bump stop. While doing this we replaced the driver side trailing arm as it wasn't really straight....

Removed the mud guards (well what was left of them!) after they had been attacked by the dogs (like the alternator cable).

Connected up most of the wiring loom. There are still one or two wires that are left.

The car looks so much better now that it is sitting at a more respectable height at the rear. The pictures don't quite show it, but it's fairly low.

The old repaired extractors that were previously on the silvertop have been fitted. We tried fitting a couple of different sets (include the big 4-1 I posted pictures of earlier), but they all sat too low (and would scrape once the front is lowered. The strange thing is that the extractors that are too big/long have previously (apparently) been on 86s, obviously the rail/floor is slightly different (the engine must sit higher in the 86).

We tried to replace the extension on the oil filter with an AE82(?) oil cooler connection, but while fitting it it snapped :( we have another one (which we may fit to allow me to run a cooler), but if I am using the smaller extractors it's not really required.

Pics!!

It's slowly progressing along.

This weekend we fitted the passenger seat and belt (in the hopes that I'll be able to take passengers at the upcoming Matsuri, turns out though due to Wakefield regs I won't be able to until I get a half cage :( )

The dash (or what's left of it) is now back in, and some of the gauges are installed.

We tested the wiring and when you try the ignition the starter motor is turning and the lights all seem to work (this is a good sign as it means we hopefully won't have any issues with the electrics).

We removed all the glue that was previously holding on the plastic strips on the side. Someone (KENut) got a little enthusiastic with the metho, lol, giving me a number 70 and a stripe on the boot. Along with vandalising the car by making it say "CSexy 70" on the boot, all valid mods to increase the driftspecness :lolcry:

I'm still waiting on a surge tank that I order. Once this arrives the pumps and tank can be fitted (a hole has already been put in the boot). We still need to add all the fluids and get an exhaust made.

During the next two weeks I need to organise some decent tires for the front (at the moment I'm leaning towards Adrenaline RE002s), for the rear I'll just be burning stockies at Wakefield (since the car is underpowered it'll be best to have something easy to spin/smoke).

I ordered a set of coilovers off Rollaclub, which haven't arrived yet. I'm hoping that there was nothing fishy about the purchase and that the delay is merely the courier company being slow... :glare:

Couple of pics (once it's all finished I'll have to get some decent shots, similar to some I'd done of friends cars http://craigtregear.smugmug.com/Cars/Canberra-Car-Scene/19708277_tLBXK6#1571387407_9wmCmq5 ):
