April 4, 201115 yr comment_514657 in the planning stage of mounting an su carby and turbo to 5k. An su carby is required to face in one particular direction right? i believe it was sidedraft in its original application.. also how long a pipe can i have between carby and turbo? Report
April 15, 201115 yr Author comment_517237 Ok I found my own answer.. keep it horizontal.. on it's side. Appears they are a simple carb, with a mixture screw.. maybe like tuning an old diesel? (minus the injection) On a non road going car, can i cut the front wheel well to fit the turbo and carb horizontally, and parallel to the engine (preferably with the carb facing forwards) would make mounting much easier ;) i would need to brace the strut right? April 15, 201115 yr comment_517246 Blow through would be far safer, responsive and you can run an intercooler and a bov. Draw through is cheaper, but has it's hazards sutch as having a bomb under your bonnet because of pressurised fuel air mixtures. I think you need to do more research about how you are mounting all this up. You should have plenty of room to fit everything in. Report
April 15, 201115 yr comment_517303 Cutting that strut tower will make your car defectable and illegle. It'll never be rego'd again and it'll fold up like anything when you stack it. Blow through is a much better idea Report
April 15, 201115 yr comment_517323 I don't know that blow through would work, as the piston relies on pressure differences to move. Plenty of people have done draw through without trouble, but people generally avoid using intercoolers so there isn't a whole lot of fuel air mix hanging around. That's a bit of a disadvantage. Keep piping short if you can as well. Report
April 15, 201115 yr comment_517328 The pressure difference is due to dynamic pressure from air rushing past the carb piston, principle is the same regardless of na or turbo. SU needs to be oriented vertically with the black adjustment knob at the to. You can angle them in one plane but you need to have angled fuel bowls. Report
April 15, 201115 yr comment_517381 Sure, but they are designed for NA. I'd be thinking you'd struggle to find the right spring weights etc to ensure that that pressure difference can be managed properly so that the needle covers a usable range. I certainly can't recall seeing many blow through SU setups, I'd imagine there's a reason for it. Report
April 15, 201115 yr comment_517385 MG Metro Turbos had a blowthru SU HIF44. Ebay UK might be a good place to find one. Report
April 16, 201115 yr comment_517429 I certainly can't recall seeing many blow through SU setups, I'd imagine there's a reason for it. MG Metro Turbos had a blowthru SU. Exactly what I was going to say. And that was factory. Edited April 16, 201115 yr by philbey Report
April 16, 201115 yr comment_517448 I'm not saying it's not possible, I just wonder how well it would work with any old ebay special SU. Report
April 16, 201115 yr comment_517478 Just use a water methanol mix sprayed into the inlet of the carb at a determined boost level this is not as good as an intercooler but will help with detonation. Its quite a simple system to set up really just install another washer bottle a spray and a hobbs pressure switch. Mate of mine ran this set up on a bog stock 186 in a torana with a draw through su carb and vl turbo and it realed off a 13.2et not to bad in my opinion. Report
April 16, 201115 yr Author comment_517584 The car i am thinking of doing this to, will Never be road registered again, regardless. The setup i have is off a ford laser, is already setup as a suck thru su. I don't want to mess around with blow thru. I'm not wanting to intercool it, might consider the water/meth setup down the track. the way i understand it (correct me if i am wrong) is that the su is perfectly suited for suck thru as they regulate the amount of fuel in directly in line with the amount of air being drawn thru it. making tuning much easier.
