Hey guys

 

2-3 weeks ago, my right headlight blew. I found it strange as they were working fine for ages.

 

Now my indicators don't work properly, they work most of the time but sometimes they get stuck illuminated and don't flash.

 

Anyway, so today I decided to replace the front headlight, took out the old one and installed the new one.

 

it worked so I was happy but It was unusually bright and when I first turned it on inside the headlight filled with this white smoke.

 

It worked for 3 minutes and blew-out

 

Not sure whats going on here, but looks like its getting way too much power to the right headlight and something is faulty.... Any ideas?

 

I'm thinking maybe its the switch on the inside drivers radiator support, or maybe the indicator switch mechanism?

 

any help greatly appreciated, don't want to blow another headlight!

 

Also is it possible to fix the stock sealed beam koito headlights once they blow?

alternator is internal or external reg?

 

if external, check your charging volatge i reckon its up around the 15v mark :wink:

How old was the globe that blew?

 

Did you touch the globe with your fingers when you installed it? Grease/moisture from your hands can cause a globe to fail, and your sure that it was a 12volt globe?

 

Indicators could be a worn flasher Can, or excess resistance in the circuit.

 

It could be that the alternator could be over charging, put a multimeter on it and see what the output is.

 

I'm pretty sure you can't repair the original sealed beam, easier and cheaper to replace with a new unit anway.

external, someone has changed the alternator to a newer looking alternator I think its part of the problem, my dads a electrician get him to have a look and use his multimeter :) thanks for that!

Yea well I had to install it with my hands, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't an issue this time...

 

Yes the globe is a Koito Japanese globe straight out of another KE25 so its exactly the same as the globe that was in it.

 

Yea well I replaced the flasher can for another one but it didn't do much but looks like the new can I put in it was crap anyway i think...

 

I think it could be an alternator issue but strange it could develop a problem out out of nowhere?

 

I do have a big heavy duty battery in the car bigger then the stock one a KE2# takes, is that an issue?

 

Well id like to keep it original and use the stock Koito globes, I wonder if you can still buy them brand new?

alternator might not be the fault. its prob the external regulator mounted on the LHS strut tower.

I think I have a couple external regs and flasher cans here you are welcome to Tally.

ok so should I check the voltage and then change the regulator and check again?

 

Where do I check? lol I'm a total doosh when it comes to electrical :S

 

Thanks for the offer luke, I got a few spare ones here that ill give a go.

if its charging at 14.2 volts its ok (under load) anything more and than 14.5 its overcharging anything less that 13.8 its not charging enough. if you have those problems then swap the reg and retest

WHen my reg was rooted I just put multimeter on battery and as you rev the car up it would just keep getting higher! My problem wasn't headlights but was burning out points! Got a new reg for 20 bucks and it was good as gold
