Ae92 Alternator Problem..

Hey Guys,

I am new to the forum so please be patient as i am just learning about Corolla's..

Recently, I the battery light in my AE92 Corolla Hatch has been coming on infrequently, for example, i went to lunch today and it came on for a second then went off..

I have upgraded "the big 3" - Battery pos > Alt pos, Battery neg > chasis and Chasis > engine block with 0 Gauge power wire and fused the Alt pos to batt pos.. yet still i am getting the light ..

I have also bought a new battery and changed the terminals completely

I am a tad worried one day it will just kick the bucket..

The current alternator is 50A and the one that was in there before that died was also 50A .. I have a 70A alternator sitting on my bench at home and was wondering if there is anything else to do besides change the alternator first ? or do you all agree it is either the alternator/ regulator (or rectifier depending on what you all call it)?

The engine is a 4AFC (Carburetor) with A/C etc etc etc

I have noticed when i meter the battery while idling with the A/C on and pretty much everything it VERY rapidly drops to well below 13 Volts ..

this obviously is not normal so is it just the piss weak alternator causing this ?

I was told the non A/C versions of my car had a 50A stock alt whereas the A/C versions have a 70A..

hey dude,

awesoeme post, lots of info given!

it sounds like your alternator is on the way out.

but don't just go and replace it!!!!

take the alternator off, and drop it off at an auto electrician.

he will test it for you, they have a load tester, and if required he will rebuild it for you. if he is any good, he will sand blast the outside of it, paint it silver, rpelace all the bushes in it, and make it better than a new one.

and it shouldn't cost you much more than $100. pending where you are located i know a good auto elecy, he has done a few of my alternators and starter motors over the years.

i was going to suggest the regulator on the rear of the alternator.

Hmmm i wouldn't there would be a different between the a/c and non a/c, could understand the difference between the 4afc and the 4afe :hmm:. then then again i havent had to changed the alternator/regulator on either of my ae9x's :hmm:

for future reference toyota's part no. is: 27700‑70030 - REGULATOR ASSY, GENERATOR :y:
