wyldephyre Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 So... have you ever come around a corner, get fixated on something off the track, and end up heading towards it? Where I am getting at is, would it be recommeded to me, as a photographer, to: a) Wear something loud, so you can see me from miles away, or: b) Stay out of hidden out of sight. so that you guys don't lock on an end up smashing into me. Another rally driver once mentioned to me that if you wanted to sabotage someone's corner, tie a bright pink ribbon to a tree... go figure. Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 i can so imagine you, all dressed up commando-style in camos and warpaint, squatting with your high-powered scope, laying in ambush for the perfect shot :) Quote
wyldephyre Posted December 28, 2005 Author Report Posted December 28, 2005 Yes, actively staying out of their way is obviously #1, but to get a good shot, a risk has to be taken. In the same vein, you are taking a risk anytime you go near a rally stage. It's all about finding an acceptable level of risk, for an acceptable outcome. Quote
Redwarf Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 There are enough people out in the bush in a normal rally that you end up not really noticeing them. I tend to be focused on what ever is the furthest part of the road I can see. If you're not on it, I don't see you. Even if you are day glow! Although for some reason, naked people seem to get my attention..... Quote
st.nick Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 Redwarf... Your comment of naked people reminds me of getting "mooned" by about 10 strangers on my FIRST night rally It was later I find out that it was the ORGANISERS and other car-club members, and it was actually a rite of passage and induction ritual!! Aahhh... Those were the days!! Wyld, Try to wear something in-conspicuous. Ive had people lodge 'official' complaints about my photography points in the past (FYI, the complaints were dismissed coz the guys a f@$kwit...) Some drivers can get really pissed about small things, and if you 'bawk' them in a corner, they WILL come and find you later!! Always keep alert, and NEVER sit down if you are in a run-off area!! I had a out-of-control Lancer come at me at like 140kmh a few years back, flattening out trees right where I was standing!! Lucky I was standing and had an 'escape route'!! Not even time to take a shot... f@$k he was coming at me FAST!! :shudder: I guess if you want to stand in REALLY stupid spots, you should become a 'registered/Licensed photographer' Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 your comments make me think of a couple of car videos i have the first one is rob's naked comment. an F1 driver causes a huge pileup crash. they play back and freeze-frame his cabin footage, and his head is turned to check out a chick who's got her tits out. pretty observant at 200+km/h the second is darren's runoff area comment. a photographer is standing behind a tree to get photos of cars as they come round a corner, an evo comes around, flips, slides, and puts its roof straight into the tree the guy is standing behind with a massive thump. the guy had only just started to react and had moved about 6 inches away when the car hit the tree. had it not been there, he would have been toast then again, i guess if the tree hadn't been there, he wouldn't have been there either Quote
Redwarf Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 Up here most rally officials seem to wear flouro bibs, so you kind of get used to seeing them in the forest. Where's Tony with his naked man photo? Quote
wyldephyre Posted December 28, 2005 Author Report Posted December 28, 2005 I always sign on as an official, and I have adopted a polivy of wearing bright orange tshirts, if they don;t give me a bib. No one has mentioned anything to me about where I sit... most the drivers seem happy to see me shooting. And I seem to have an instinct for trouble, and a good pair of legs. Just ask Tony. :) Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 the second is darren's runoff area comment. a photographer is standing behind a tree to get photos of cars as they come round a corner, an evo comes around, flips, slides, and puts its roof straight into the tree the guy is standing behind with a massive thump. the guy had only just started to react and had moved about 6 inches away when the car hit the tree. had it not been there, he would have been toast I have this video, and I can't get over how casual he appears after the car stops on the tree. He just strolls over towards it, as if it hadn't just come at him at 8 billion miles an hour. He must have balls of steel Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 i think he's just acting casual, so that nobody comes near him to check if he's alright, otherwise they would be saying "hey what smells like someone shit their pants?" :) Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 haha maybe, but damn that would have been scary...Better him than me Quote
mikeys toy[RL] Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 how about an audi vs. a bus? Quote
